Lois Jean Neal, 81

January 4, 2015

Lois Jean Neal, 81, of Timblin, died Jan. 2, 2015, at her residence.

Born Feb. 6, 1933, in Punxsutawney, she was the daughter of the late Arnold E. and M. Marie (Martin) Shumaker.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Timblin United Methodist Church. Lois loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved camping, sitting around the fire with her grandchildren and her two cats, Catdog and Frankie.

She will always be remembered as a good woman, one who loved all and was loved by many.

Richard Eugene “Gene” Miller, 88

Richard Eugene “Gene” Miller, 88, of Indiana, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2015, at St. Andrews Village, Indiana.

He was born Jan. 4, 1926, in Rochester Mills, a son of the late James P. and Floy (Weaver) Miller.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Rochester Mills and enjoyed being a youth fellowship advisor.

Connie M. Bellerillo, 84

Connie M. Bellerillo, 84, of Punxsutawney, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

She was born Jan. 1, 1931, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Joseph and Katherine (Rend) Micale.

On June 19, 1965, she married Carl R. Bellerillo, who preceded her in death on Oct. 17, 2007.

She was a member of Saints Cosmas and Damian Roman Catholic Church of Punxsutawney. She was on the school board for 16 years, a member of the Catholic Daughters of America for 19 years, a Girl Scouts leader for 31 years and gave many donations to various charities over her lifetime.

Naomi Jane (Condron) Schreckengost, 72

Naomi Jane (Condron) Schreckengost, 72, of Punxsutawney, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2015, at home, surrounded by her family.

She was born Dec. 3, 1942, in Echo, Pa., a daughter of the late Regis and Luella (Neville) Condron.

On July 23, 1960, she married Fred Doyle Schreckengost. He preceded her in death on Jan. 19, 1973.

Naomi enjoyed playing Bingo, nurturing her house plants and preparing meals for her family. Her biggest enjoyment was spending time with her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Paul Albert Michell, 84

Paul Albert Michell, 84, of Hyde Avenue, Ridgway, Pa., went to be with his family in Heaven on Jan. 1, 2015.

He died at Highland View Health Care Center in Brockway.

He was born in Cloe, Pa. on March 8, 1930, to the late Paul W. and Hazel M. Johnson Mitchell.

He was married on June 25, to Doris Virginia Cook, who preceded him in death on Nov. 26, 2011.

Ira Eugene "Shorty" Fillhart, 81

Ira Eugene "Shorty" Fillhart, 81, of Punxsutawney, died Friday Jan. 2, 2015 , at his residence.

He was born in Rathmel on Nov. 20, 1933, to the late Milo and Laura (Yohe) Fillhart.

Shorty was married on Sept. 11, 1954, to Ruth M. Dallenbach Fillhart of Punxsutawney. She survives.

He was an employee of Doverspike Brothers Coal Co., where he retired after 44 years of service.

Shorty was an avid trout fisherman and loved Ford Mustangs, Cadillacs and being with his family. He also enjoyed his church family and fellowship dinners.

Frances Marie (Geist) Voytus, 77

January 1, 2015

Frances Marie (Geist) Voytus died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2014, at home, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Oct. 12, 1937, in Punxsutawney, the last surviving member of the family of Charles Eugene and Mary Elizabeth (Stiver) Geist.

She married Frank William Voytus on Oct. 27, 1956. They spent 46 wonderful years together before his death on Jan. 5, 2003.

Esther Ruth Spangler, 73

Esther Ruth Spangler, 73, of Summerville, Pa., died Monday, Dec. 29, 2014, at Penn Highland Healthcare in DuBois, PA.

Born Sept. 12, 1941, in Brookville. She was the daughter of the late Hazel Sowers Neal.

Esther was a graduate of Brookville High School. She was married to Lee George Spangler on Sept. 28, 1962, at the Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church, where she was still a member. She belonged to the Ladies Home Mission and the Eastern Star.

She enjoyed sewing and scrapbooking.

Esther was a school bus driver for the Brookville Area School District for more than 25 years.

Martha J. Holt, 87

Martha J. Holt, (nee North) of Line Lexington, Pa., passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2014, at Doylestown Hospital. She was 87 years old. She was the beloved wife of Scott Holt, who survives.

Born in Panic, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Ira Earl and Mary Zimmerman North. She was the loving mother of Tom (Jennifer) and Daniel (Nancy) Heitzenrater, Mary Mellor and Larry (Jacqueline) Heitzenrater; sister of Naomi Lyle; grandmother of Alex and Cassidy Heitzenrater, Christine and Rose Mellor and Jessica, Zachary and Sarah Jane Heitzenrater.

Suspicious suitcases set off a scare

YOUNG TOWNSHIP — Suspicious packages that were found in the parking
lot at Walmart in Young Township

Thursday were found not to be dangerous following an investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police Hazardous Device and Explosive Section (HDES) unit.

According to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police, two suspicious packages, consisting of two suitcases that were left in the Walmart parking lot near the Lawn and Garden portion of the building and were discovered at approximately 7 a.m. on Thursday.
