Each year, five women are chosen by the Punxsutawney Career Women’s Club for Career Women’s Week, which this year runs through Nov. 13. The criteria used for choosing these women are based not only on their professional efforts, but also on the contributions they have made to community and family.

Pine Street paving project closed after change order OK

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Even though the paving took place during the middle of July, the Pine Street CDBG paving project is finally closed, as reported at Monday’s Punxsutawney Borough Council meeting.

Borough Manager Ben White said the engineer met with the contractor Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc. about several areas of concern and completed the punch list of items.

White presented a change order for a reduction from the current contract price of $93,067.50 that was reduced by $8,857.55 to a new contract price of $84,209.95.

Four Lady Chucks complete season at state meet

HERSHEY — Four members of the Punxsy girls' cross country team competed in Saturday's 2010 PIAA Class AAA Championships, and while not performing poorly by any means, head coach George Wehrle said that the results were somewhat less than expected.

Meterko, Baker successful at state meet

HERSHEY — Up against the best runners in the state in the big school division, Punxsy senior A.J. Meterko and junior Dane Baker came away feeling pretty good about their performances Saturday in Hershey at the PIAA Class AAA Boys' Cross Country Championships.

Meterko, a senior who was competing in his third state meet, finished in 114th place with a time of 17:26 out of 283 runners. Baker, running at states for the second time, followed in 210th place in 18:09.

Fire guts New Anchor Inn; former owner saved from the flames

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A day after a vicious fire gutted the restaurant that has been in his family for generations, New Anchor Inn owner Dave Setree said he and his family are taking each day one at a time.

“I’m open to anything,” he said Monday when asked about the possibility of reopening the restaurant. “I feel that God has a plan, and He’s kind of giving me a clean slate to just wait and see what path to take in my life.”

Council posts budget with no tax hike

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Monday, Punxsutawney Borough Council approved and voted to place on display its preliminary 2011 budget with no tax increase.

Council President Susan Glessner said that council did agree to shift 0.15 mills from the recreation department’s budget to the library budget to make up for a shortfall in funding from the state.

She praised department heads and borough employees for their budgeting so they can continue borough services without increasing taxes.

Mary M. Reed, 89

November 9, 2010

Mary M. Reed, 89, Ringgold, died Monday, Nov. 8, 2010, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

She was born Sept. 19, 1921, in Timblin, a daughter of the late Charles and Gladys (Snyder) Anderson.

Sept. 19, 1941, she married Charles “Skipper” Richard Reed, who survives.

Mrs. Reed was a member of the Ringgold United Methodist Church.

Nellie Elizabeth Postlewait, 98

Nellie Elizabeth Postlewait, 98, Punxsutawney, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 2010, at her home.

She was born Dec. 28, 1911, in Corsica, a daughter of the late John M. and Della (McKinley) Love.

She was married to William M. Postlewait, who preceded her in death in April 1987. Mrs. Postlewait was a homemaker and a member of the Presbyterian Church in Punxsutawney.
