Defensive intensity powers Chucks to first win

December 15, 2010

NEW BETHLEHEM — For the first time since Jan. 6, the Punxsy boys' basketball team exited the court with a victory Tuesday night.

Thanks to a defense that forced turnovers and allowed just two third-quarter points, the Chucks (1-1) ended their 15-game losing streak with a huge 62-34 victory over Redbank Valley in New Bethlehem.

Early in the contest, when Punxsy was ahead just 14-12 after the first quarter, the Bulldogs were getting to all of the loose ball first.

Brookville basketball wins a pair of games on road

December 15, 2010

DUKE CENTER — It wasn't the best game the Raiders have played in recent years, but it was still a win.

Brookville traveled all the way to Duke Center Tuesday to take on Otto-Eldred, and though it returned with a 59-28 victory, Brookville head coach Bud Baughman wasn't too thrilled with his team's performance.

"I didn't think we played real well in any phase of the game tonight," Baughman said. "It was a long trip though, and we're happy to get the win."

Leading the way for Brookville offensively was Zane Hackett, who netted 16 points on eight baskets from the field.

Doctors said Cody Kuntz wouldn’t live the life he is now

December 14, 2010

BROCKWAY — Right now, the only thing 10-year-old Cody Kuntz of Brockway is really worried about is his continuing visits to the dentist.

Due to a chromosome disorder, Cody — the son of Dan and Barb Kuntz of Brockway — has no adult teeth to fill in when his baby teeth fall out, and he’s looking at needing a palate or braces, because his adult teeth won’t replace baby’s teeth he loses.

“I just wish my mouth was normal,” he said, adding, “I just hope when my growth spurt comes, I’m going to grow.”

Sestak: We didn’t get the message across

December 14, 2010

CLARION — Joe Sestak, the recently defeated candidate for a U.S. Senate seat, visited DuBois and Clarion Tuesday as part of a state-wide tour.

The purpose of the tour, Sestak said, was to thank those who supported him. In doing so, though, he answered questions and addressed issues of concern for his constituency.

“This is my thank-you tour,” he said. “And a chance to say, ‘Yes, we can do this. We came so close in a year when every other Democratic candidate in Pennsylvania was getting smoked.’”

Junior-high Chucks lose a close one to Indiana

December 13, 2010

INDIANA — Indiana won seven of the 12 bouts on the mat and had just enough at the end to surpass the Punxsy junior-high wrestling team last Friday, 47-39.

The Chucks (0-1) were boosted by four-straight wins by fall from 110 to 130 pounds, but Punxsy struggled to win just one match after that once the weight classes grew larger.

Ahead 39-29 with three bouts remaining, Punxsy bumped up Austin Covatch and Troy Peace, giving Indiana a forfeit at 185 pounds. Covatch and Peace, however, each lost by fall, ultimately pushing Indiana ahead for the eight-point win.
