Seven Chucks named KSAC football All-Stars

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After an undefeated regular season and a league championship, a number of Punxsy football players are bringing home Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference hardware.

Leading the way on the All-Star First-Team and Second-Team lists was Punxsy's defense, which surrendered 39 points during the Chucks' 10-0 regular season.

Circle of Trees event to feature new model of library

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The holiday season is upon Punxsutawney, and Barclay Square’s circle of patiently waiting pines is proof that Christmas is just around the corner.

This year will mark the Rotary Club’s fourth-annual Circle of Trees project. Placed Veterans’ Day weekend, 19 artificial trees surround Memorial Bandstand in Barclay Square, ready to be decorated by local non-profit groups and scheduled for illumination on “Light Up Night” Saturday.

Jefferson County’s three participants in the NFL’s Punt, Pass & Kick event — (from left) Abby Jo Northey of Brookville, Laney Monroe of Punxsutawney and Blaise Carney of Reynoldsville — took part in the contest at the Steelers’ training facility on the South Side and then took the field at halftime during the Steelers versus Raiders game Sunday at Heinz Field. Abby Jo took second in the 10-and-11-year-old girls’ division, while Laney took third in the eight-and-nine-year-old girls’ division. Blaise’s placement in the eight-and-nine-year-old boys’ division was unavailable.

Noribel Z. Geesey, 96

November 22, 2010

Noribel Z. Geesey, 96, formerly of Hollidaysburg, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010, at The Winds at Mattern Orchard.

She was born May 10, 1914, in Big Run, a daughter of the late David A. and Mae (Bush) Zufall.

July 17, 1937, she married Scott S. Geesey, who preceded her in death in 1977.

County residents support troops through PASR project

PUNXSUTAWNEY — In the real spirit of Thanksgiving, area residents demonstrated their appreciation for the service of the American troops in Afghanistan by generously responding to a drive to send gifts to the men and women serving abroad.

Sponsored by the Jefferson County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR), the project encouraged people of all ages to drop off snack foods, stationery, toiletry items and other merchandise which the troops have requested.

Tibbs family celebrates 14 years at church

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The congregation of the First Church of God in Punxsutawney recently celebrated the completion of 14 years of service for Greg Tibbs as the senior pastor of the church located on Skyview Drive.

Tibbs, his wife Jolanda and three sons — John, Chase and Hunter — have also served the congregation in a variety of ways over the past 14 years.

The Tibbs family was serving at the First Church of God in Cynthiana, Ky., for 13 years when they received the call to pick up their young family and move to Punxsutawney.

A case which will be of interest to our readers was tried in Lawrence county recently. The points in the case briefly stated are: Miss Alice Dunham sued the school district of Sharpsville for wages, the plaintiff having been elected a teacher two years ago but had not articled.

Donna Marie Adams, 66

Donna Marie Adams, 66, Punxsutawney, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

She was born Nov. 26, 1943, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Denver and Hilda Marie (Hartle) Knisely.

June 19, 1965, she married Charles T. Adams, who preceded her in death June 7, 2002.

Mrs. Adams was a member of the St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church in Walston.

She was a homemaker.

Modest hero fulfills her duty: ‘Keep Rose safe’

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Carol Stephens, one of Rose Setree’s caretakers, had arrived at Rose’s apartment above the New Anchor Inn Nov. 7 to begin her 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift.

Rose said she had gone to bed around 10:30 p.m. after a busy day that included attending church and going to the grocery store.

“Sabrina (another one of Rose’s caretakers) had given a report, and she had left, so I just checked on Rose, turned the lights on and then I was watching the news,” Carol recalled this week. “But I looked up and smelled plastic burning.
