"They were hitting the ball, finding the gaps and putting the ball in play," Punxsy manager Eric Britton said. "It just snowballed on us."

Horner, Aikens combine for Punxsy no-hitter

July 2, 2011

Kate Horner pitched three no-hit innings, and Grace Aikens relieved her with two perfect innings, helping Punxsy cruise to an 12-0 victory in five innings Friday over Ridgway in the losers' bracket of the Minor League softball All-Star tournament in Punxsutawney.

Punxsy manager Steve White was very pleased with the way his girls pitched.

"They pitched with a lot more confidence tonight," he said. "I felt that they found the strike zone early and were able to build off that."

Horner, Punxsy's starting pitcher, struggled a bit with her control, walking one batter and hitting four.

Punxsy battles back, wins in extra innings

July 2, 2011

ST. MARYS — The game seemed to be slipping away from Punxsy in the bottom of the third inning Friday night when St. Marys scored four runs on three hits and three errors. But Punxsy fought back to send the game to extra innings and won 6-4 in nine in Minor League baseball All-Star action in St. Marys.

"That was a fun one," Punxsy manager Eric Britton said. "It was pretty nerve-wracking. I've coached and managed a lot of games, and that was probably one of the best I've ever been involved with."

Walk Talk - A Dawn of a New Day

July 2, 2011

When I exited The Punxsutawney Spirit building following an interview for the vacant sports writer job in October 2006, I climbed into my car and flipped on my iPod as I began my 2 1/2-hour drive back to my hometown of Erie.

The iPod, which was set on shuffle at that particular moment, began to play "Dawn of a New Day," a song by my favorite band, In Flames.

Already feeling good about how well the interview went, the random appearance of this song made it clear to me: I got the job.

Fast-forward to nearly five years later, and the next step of my life is a week away from starting.

Punxsutawney Phil is the best man for this proposal

July 2, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Not even Punxsutawney Phil could have prognosticated the plan for this proposal.

Sarah O'Donnell and Jeff White enjoyed the “Phantastic Phils!” — especially the one in front of The Punxsutawney Spirit office on Pine Street — so much, they returned to Punxsy Friday to track down the remaining eight statues they couldn't find in December.

But Friday, Jeff — with help from Spirit staff, Punxsutawney Phil himself and his co-handler, John Griffiths — pulled off a larger plan: Propose to Sarah in front of their favorite “Phantastic Phil!” at The Spirit office.

"I do get nervous days before the festival starts," he said. "But I know everyone that helps get this thing up and running does a great job of it. I'm excited to see how things turn out this year."
