James D. Hartzfeld, 72, Punxsutawney, died Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at UPMC-Presbyterian as the result of injuries sustained in a farming accident Monday.
He was born Nov. 11, 1938, in Luthersburg, a son of the late Eugene and Arvilla (Swartzlander) Hartzfeld.
Aug. 17, 1973, he married Kathleen L. (Bonsall) Hartzfeld, who survives.
Mr. Hartzfeld was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve and a retired coal miner of 35 years. He enjoyed many years of taking care of the Bonsall Family Farm.
Joseph Lellock Jr., 90, Punxsutawney, died Tuesday, May 24, 2011, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.
He was born May 29, 1920, in Sykesville, a son of the late Joseph and Veronica (Paholsky) Lellock.
He was married to Ethel Irene (Sivanich) Lellock, who preceded him in death.
Mr. Lellock was a carpenter and an honorary retiree with 50 years in the Carpentersâ€™ Union.
He served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II and received the Purple Heart, the Silver Star and three Bronze Stars.
He was a member of Ss. Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic Church.
Elizabeth (Walker) Midock, 86, New Kensington, died Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at Presbyterian Senior Care, Oakmont.
She was born May 4, 1925, in Anita, a daughter of the late Thomas C. and Jennie (Armstrong) Walker.
Oct. 18, 1947, she married Alexander Midock, who survives. They were married for 64 years.
Mrs. Midock was a kind and loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
She enjoyed spending time with her family, sewing, gardening, crocheting and doing crossword puzzles.
Donald John Monoskey, 69, Marion Center, died Tuesday, May 24, 2011, at Crystal Waters.
He was born May 18, 1942, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Joseph Charles and Anna (DeBeck) Monoskey.
Mr. Monoskey was a coal auger operator.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â€” Punxsy starting pitcher Joe Pisano is flourishing at the right time.
The senior, who had a 10.70 ERA through his first 20 innings before he allowed three runs over his last 14 1/3-innings this season, was dominant Wednesday in the District IX Class AAA Semifinals against Bradford at Rich Kuntz Memorial Field in Punxsutawney.
Pisano delivered a one-hit gem during the Chucks' 10-1 victory over the Owls (5-13) to put Punxsy in position to win its eighth consecutive district title.
The first project of three is nearly complete with the demolition of this house Monday, located at the corner of Route 310 (Elk Run Avenue) and Route 119 (Ridge Avenue). According to PennDOT, the property was purchased from Brian Horner, who was using the former store and house to store tires. The demolition of the structure is a sight and distance improvement project, which is a portion of two other projects: The replacement of the bridge on Route 119 that travels over Elk Run Creek, and a third project which involves construction of a turning lane at the intersection.
BROOKVILLE â€” Tuesday, the Jefferson County Commissioners proclaimed the month of May as Older Americans Month.
More than 4,000 people aged 60 and older live in Jefferson County, and this proclamation is designed to recognize their involvement in the lives of the countyâ€™s residents.
Mikki Oakes, director of the Area Agency on Agingâ€™s Development and Community Relations, thanked the commissioners for their efforts in connecting to the community.
â€śWe appreciate the commissionersâ€™ support of our seniors here in Jefferson County,â€ť she said.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â€” Like everything else, the price of lunch will probably rise once again in all cafeterias in the Punxsutawney Area School District due to federal guidelines.
Lesa Conner, board member and chairperson for the cafeteria committee, said at Wednesdayâ€™s board committee meeting that the board is looking at raising the price of school lunches by $0.05 for the 2011-12 school year.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â€” Focused was a word Punxsy first-year manager Mike Dickey constantly used Tuesday to describe the Chucks as they enter the District IX Class AAA Playoffs against Bradford.
The top-seeded Chucks have an ultimate goal of winning their eighth title in a row, but before they do that, they'll have to get past No. 4 Bradford at 4:30 p.m. today at Rich Kuntz Memorial Field in Punxsutawney.
