ROAD WORK BEGINS

July 13, 2011

Construction workers from Power Contracting and Jefferson Paving work on the $1.1 million PennDOT downtown traffic signal project Wednesday at the Jefferson Street/Mahoning Street intersection. State budget’s done, but county still has questions

BROOKVILLE — Although this is the first time in nine years that Pennsylvania lawmakers have passed a state budget on time, there are still a lot of questions left to be answered.

During Wednesday’s Jefferson County Commission meeting, the commissioners could not relay information about final budget figures because they themselves have little to no information.

Chairman Paul Corbin called it a game in progress.

Punxsy plays tonight after extra-inning win

ST. MARYS — With St. Marys one out from a victory, Punxsy's Alyssa Reitz belted a two-out RBI double to drive in Ivy Phillips and tie the score at three in a game that Punxsy would go on to win 7-3 in eight innings in Junior League softball All-Star action Monday night in St. Marys.

Punxsy advanced to a rematch with DuBois in the bracket final for the District 10 championship with the win. Punxsy will need to win two games, as it is coming out of the losers' bracket.

Punxsy edged out by DuBois in championship, 6-4

DUBOIS — Punxsy's Post 62 Senior Legion baseball team's season came to a disappointing end with a 6-4 loss against DuBois in the winner-take-all championship game Tuesday night at Showers Field in DuBois.

Punxsy manager Doug Mesoraco was proud of his players and the way they battled, though, not only Tuesday, but throughout the six years that he has been working with them.

Punxsy tops Luigi's DuBois in Brookville tourney, 10-4

BROOKVILLE — Punxsy 9-and-10 year olds took down Luigi's DuBois in round one of the Craig Lewis Memorial Tournament Tuesday in Brookville.

Punxsy's Willie Hoover went 3-for-3 from the plate with two doubles and three RBIs, leading his team's offense to victory.

Logan Johnston also had two doubles with three RBIs, going 2-for-3 at bat, and the team totaled eleven hits.

"I was impressed with everyone's play," Punxsy manager Mark Ewing said. "Everyone contributed really well."

Punxsy will take on the winner of the Franklin/ElCo II (St. Marys) game at 6 p.m. today in Brookville.

Road work set to begin today

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Now that the festival season has concluded in Punxsutawney for another year, it’s time for borough residents and motorists to prepare for the return of construction season.

Police Chief Tom Fedigan said at Monday’s Punxsutawney Borough Council meeting that motorists should prepare themselves for significant delays beginning today.

Contractor Power Contracting will shut down the intersection of Jefferson Street and Mahoning Street today, Fedigan said, and there will be delays in the downtown area, along with parking restrictions and tagged meters.

Groups, volunteers gear up for Relay’s celebration of life

PUNXSUTAWNEY — There are festivals for mountain laurel, Punxsutawney Phil and even fall leaves, but this weekend, there will be a festival in Barclay Square that celebrates life: The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life.

Not only does the relay celebrate many cancer survivors, it also promotes research to find a cure.

As of last week, teams have raised $45,000. The ultimate goal is $78,000.
This year’s theme is “Disco — Stayin’ Alive.”

C. Richard (Skipper) Reed, 91

July 12, 2011

C. Richard (Skipper) Reed, 91, Ringgold, died Monday, July 11, 2011, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

He was born April 3, 1920, in Ringgold, a son of the late Daniel and Elizabeth Landola (Perry) Reed.

Sept. 19, 1941, he married Mary M. Anderson, who preceded him in death Nov. 8, 2010.

Mr. Reed was a member of the Ringgold United Methodist Church and the Ringgold Sportsmen’s Association. He was also an original member of the Ringgold Area Volunteer Fire Company.

He was retired from Hanley Brick of Summerville.

Beverly A. Jesse, 86

Beverly A. Jesse, 86, Punxsutawney, formerly of Killeen, Texas, passed away Monday, July 11, 2011, at her home.

She was born June 20, 1925, in Westminster, Mass., a daughter of the late Lewis R. and Effedelia (Harrington) Berry.

She was married to John W. Jesse Sr., who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Jesse was a seamstress and was extremely talented at making afghans, crocheting and making doilies. She also enjoyed gardening.

Punxsy taken down by Brookville in four innings, 16-3

BROOKVILLE — The Brookville Area Little League Craig Lewis Memorial Tournament began Monday. The tournament features nine 9-and-10 year old teams and seven 11-and-12 year old teams from around the district.

In the first round, Punxsutawney 9-and-10 year olds faced Williams/Servco (Brookville) and were ousted. They fell 16-3 in four innings.

Brookville acted as the away team during Monday night's game and gained an early lead, scoring five runs in the top of the first.
