Punxsy places second in machine-pitch tourney

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy Pirates received the runner-up award in the 7-and 8-year old pitching machine tournament Saturday in Punxsutawney.

Five teams competed in the double-elimination format contest, and Punxsy placed second only to St. Marys.

Punxsy played five games throughout the day, losing to St. Marys during the first and last games of the tournament. After being defeated by St. Marys, the Pirates beat Kane, Johnsonburg and Cranberry to advance back to the tournament championship.

The Huey Brothers of Punxsutawney placed second in the 10 and under division of the Groundhog Tournament last weekend. Reward offered for arson information

BIG RUN — Another fire in Big Run has been ruled arson by the state police fire marshal, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) has entered the investigation and is offering a reward for tips that could lead to the arrest of the person(s) responsible for the arsons.

The ATF is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual(s) involved with any of the fires in the Big Run borough area.

Residents worry as arsonist targets Big Run buildings

BIG RUN — As the number of arson fires in the Big Run area continues to mount following the ruling that a second fire at a house on Caroline Street was intentionally set on fire, people are becoming more concerned.
Area residents, whose names will remain anonymous, said they are afraid to go to sleep at night because of the worry that their homes could be next.

Nick Lantz, Big Run Borough Council president,said that many people who live in Big Run are asking him what they can do to help deter any more arson fires — and catch the individual(s) who are starting these blazes.

Library Days continue today

Cindy Hill (left), a committee volunteer for Friends of the Library, set up a used book sale in front of County Market Tuesday to help raise money for the Punxsutawney Memorial Library. Hill said the committee plans to donate the money from the used book sale to the young adult section this year. Buying books to help benefit the library is Roxanne Morris. The book sale was part of Library Days, which continue daily this week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Friday.

With the NFL Player's Association and the owners reaching an agreement last week and training camps and free agency already in full swing, I know that football should be the only thing on my mind. Strangely, though, the only things I can think about are baseball and softball.

Punxsy splits Monday's games, wins state tournament

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After losing the first championship game early Monday afternoon, Punxsy's 13- and 14-year old VFW Teener League All-Stars bounced back to win the winner-take-all championship game in the late afternoon to earn the title of state champs.

Trailing 4-1, Punxsy scored nine runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 10-4 lead.

The big inning would prove to be enough as Brycen Paulinellie pitched a complete game, allowing six runs on nine hits and striking out ten, to earn the 14-6 win.

The Punxsy 13- and 14-year-old VFW Teener League All-Stars clinched the state title with a 14-6 win over Schuylkill County East All-Stars Monday afternoon in Punxsutawney. Phantastic Phil! co-creator restores statue, remembers friendship

PUNXSUTAWNEY — As it happens over time, some things begin to wear down and need to be refurbished. The same can be said about some of the "Phantastic Phils!" throughout Punxsy.

Recently, "Fireman Phil," on display in front of the Central Fire Department at the Mahoning East Civic Center, was taken into the shop for restoration by one of its original co-creators, Nance Finley.
