Betty Jane Craft, 72

July 11, 2011

Betty Jane Craft, 71, Punxsutawney, died Monday, July 11, 2011, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

She was born Aug. 17, 1939, a daughter of the late Ida Mae Miller and Arnold Fetterman.

June 8, 1957, she married Terry T. “Ted” Craft, who survives.
Mrs. Craft had previously worked as an inspector at Sportswear and Ideal Products.

She loved spending time with her family and her dog, Timmy. She liked to fish, going to flea markets, Cook Forest and collecting porcelain dolls. She was also a Steelers fan.

Bertha A. Henery, 94

Bertha A. Henery, 94, Sykesville, died Saturday, July 9, 2011, at East Park Care Center, Ohio, following a lengthy illness.

She was born Feb. 2, 1917, in Curwensville, a daughter of the late George and Maria (Wellgus) Mayersky.

Dec. 31, 1945, she married Raymond "Jim" Henery, who preceded her in death in 2007. They were married for more than 60 years.

Mrs. Henery was a member of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Sykesville. She was a volunteer at the DuBois Red Cross for 16 years.

DuBois forces winner-take-all final with Punxsy

DUBOIS — The DuBois Post 17 American Legion baseball team scored five runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings of Sunday afternoon's game against Punxsy Post 62,.

The final score was 15-3, and the game ended in five innings via the 12-run rule at Showers Field in DuBois.

"We didn't bring the same intensity as we did the other day, that's for sure," Punxsy manager Mike Dickey said. "Maybe it was a let down. I don't know, I really can't explain it. They hit the ball well, and we didn't. We just didn't show up."

Punxsy advances to District 10 bracket final

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Already leading 9-5, Punxsy's 10-&11-year old All-Stars brought 14 hitters to the plate in the top of the fifth inning and doubled its run total on the way to an 18-5 victory over DuBois Saturday in Punxsutawney.

"Everything carried over from up in Warren like I had hoped it would, especially at the plate," Punxsy manager Brad Gigliotti said.

Nine of the first 10 batters that Punxsy brought to the plate in the fifth inning reached base via base hits.

Carl Medsger led off the inning with a double off of DuBois relief pitcher Doran Walker.

Punxsy softball advances in bracket behind DiPietro's shutout

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsy's Junior League softball All-Stars batted around in three of the four innings that it came to the plate en route to a 14-0 victory in five innings over Ridgway in Punxsutawney on Saturday.

Punxsy was the home team, so it did not have to bat in the fifth inning because of the ten-run rule.

With the win, Punxsy advances in the losers' bracket and will play St. Marys today at 6 p.m. Ridgway was eliminated from the tournament with the loss.

Firefighters called twice to personal care home

ADRIAN — Multiple fire companies responded to a call at AM/PM Personal Care Home in Adrian when smoke alarms went off at approximately 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

Firefighters from seven companies were called to the scene of the facility that houses mostly elderly residents.

Bryan Smith, Elk Run Volunteer Fire Company chief, said there was quite a bit of smoke in the structure when firefighters arrived on scene.
Smith said a short search helped firefighters determine the smoke was coming from an air conditioning unit.

Car, motorcycle crashes occur over weekend

YOUNG TOWNSHIP — A driver and passenger were injured in a one-vehicle accident that occurred at 10:35 p.m. Saturday on Snyder Hill Road, Young Township.

According to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police, an Acura RSX driven by Jeffrey W. Smith Jr., 22, Punxsutawney, was traveling west on Snyder Hill Road when he lost control of his vehicle while negotiating a left curve in the roadway.

Duck Derby winners

George C. Brown Community Pool lifeguards help ducks toward the finish line Sunday during the annual Duck Derby that benefits the pool. "Duckmaster" Brian Smith picks the winners from the water as they make it through the gate. SPLASH has been holding the event for over a decade, and it started out in the Mahoning Creek but has since moved to the pool. Over 750 tickets were sold this year, and all proceeds go toward the pool's maintenance and upkeep.

George Michael Misurda, 66

George Michael Misurda, 66, Clymer, died Friday, July 8, 2011, at Indiana Regional Medical Center, Indiana.

He was born June 19, 1945, in Clymer, the son of the late George and Christine (Laverick) Misurda.

He was married to Janice (Magas) Misurda, who survives, of Clymer.
Mr. Misurda was a member of the Church of the Resurrection, Clymer site, and also sang in the choir.

Punxsy drops first game of best-of-three series to Blairsville, 11-1

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsy Fezell Enterprises Junior Legion baseball team left 13 runners on base, scoring only one run, and lost the first of a best-of-three-game playoff series against Blairsville Kovacic Insurance 11-1 Friday night in Punxsutawney.

The loss was Punxsy's first in 14 games, as it ended the regular season with a 13 game winning streak.

Despite the loss, Punxsy is still alive in the opening round of the playoffs.

"We're not out of it yet," Punxsy manager Mike Klingensmith said. "We've got lots of good ball players, and we're going to go out there and get them tomorrow."
