Annual Old Home Week Celebration starts tonight

June 28, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — "Someday when I grow up, I'm going to run off and join the carnival," has been a threat said by many children over the years when arguing with their parents.

Some kids actually attempted to follow through with that threat, but there are some children who were born into the carnival lifestyle, such as Tabby Fain of Mayo, Fla., who owns and operates the fried dough and funnel cake stand on the J&J Amusement midway today through Saturday during the Punxsutawney Fire Department's Old Home Week Celebration.

Atcheson's walk-off pushes Punxsy into final

June 28, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After Brookville scored two runs to tie the score in the top of the sixth, Punxsy's McKenzie Atcheson hit a walk-off single with two outs on a bang-bang play at first base to drive in Sam Satterlee and give Punxsy a 10-9 win in Little League softball All-Star action Monday night in Punxsutawney.

Punxsy's next game will be against DuBois, who sent Punxsy to the losers' bracket with an 11-0 win Saturday. The rematch will be played Wednesday night in DuBois.

DiPietro, Tyger power Punxsy past St. Marys, 5-0

June 28, 2011

ST. MARYS — Joey DiPietro threw 5 1/3 scoreless innings, and Jacob Tyger hit a two-run home run during the Punxsy Little League baseball All-Stars' 5-0 tournament-opening victory Monday night at St. Marys.

DiPietro surrendered just two hits, Punxsy didn't commit an error, and Punxsy's five hits came from four players during a total team effort.

THE WALK TALK TEN

June 28, 2011

1. I didn't get a chance to mention this last week, but the teams that Punxsy's baseball and softball teams lost to in the PIAA playoffs — Northern York for baseball, Valley for softball — both won a state title. For the Lady Chucks, that's three-straight years they were eliminated by the eventual state champion, and if you count their 2006 state title game defeat, that's four times in six years. Sometimes having bad luck schedule-wise can lead to your season ending sooner than expected.

Punxsy takes home victory in American Legion, 14-4

June 27, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney reigned victorious as they beat the Clearfield Chiefs 14-4 Sunday night in American Legion ball.

A seven-run first inning proved to be just the ticket for Punxsy, as the Chiefs were unable to stage any sort of comeback.

"We jumped out quick in the first inning, and we kinda never looked back after that," Punxsy manager Mike Dickey said. "It was a good win for us. We were patient when we needed to be patient, and we were aggressive when we needed to be aggressive."
