Hospital singles out not one doctor, but diversity for Docs’ Day

March 31, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Rather than choosing a single physician for Doctors’ Day this year, Punxsutawney Area Hospital chose to celebrate the diversity of all doctors employed in Punxsy.

Many would expect the doctors employed at Punxsutawney Area Hospital to be from western Pennsylvania.

However, as Dan Blough, hospital CEO, noted, using a map arrayed with push pins, the doctors are from various parts of the world, showing much diversity at the local hospital.

Red push-pins on the map depicted where each doctor was born, while blue pins displayed the medical schools they attended.

After 60 years, shows may change; the cause does not

March 30, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Seniors taking the stage for their Variety Show tonight will bring something to the annual show that has been missing for some time: The singing of the alma mater.

“I went in just to direct the alma mater,” said James Colonna, who taught music theory, band and worked with the Variety Show in one way or another every year he taught at PAHS, “and then I got really into it.”
The return of the historic alma mater to the Variety Show program is indeed warranted, as this year marks the 60th anniversary of the annual show.

March 30, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Those who attended the Marcellus Shale gas drilling presentation Wednesday at the IUP-Fairman Centre learned that there are numerous opportunities for business owners to service the gas well drilling industry.

Marlene Lellock, executive director of the Punxsutawney Area Chamber of Commerce, said the program was not about the pros and cons of Marcellus drilling, but how businesspeople and entrepreneurs can take advantage of the large natural gas formation located in the Jefferson County area and throughout Pennsylvania.

March 30, 2011

JOHNSTOWN — Miss Elizabeth, she isn’t.

While Brandy Way — a professional wrestler known on several independent circuits as Brittany Force — grew up watching and admiring Miss Elizabeth — the gorgeous valet of WWF star Randy “Macho Man” Savage — her tough side told her that if she ever broke into the business, she wouldn’t just be standing at the side of the ring, all dolled-up and fragile.
