Juvenile driver treated for injuries after vehicle rollover

YOUNG TOWNSHIP — A 17-year-old girl was transported to the hospital for injuries she suffered in a one-vehicle accident on Young Road Tuesday.

According to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police, witnesses saw the female juvenile driving a 2004 Chevrolet Blazer around 5 p.m. west on Young Road at a high rate of speed.

Police said her vehicle struck the embankment on the west side of the road, which caused the vehicle to spin clockwise and roll onto the driver’s side.

John Ray Curry, 59

John Ray Curry, 59, Mahaffey, passed away Monday, July 25, 2011.

He was born April 30, 1952, in Punxsutawney, a son of Wilma Curry, who survives, of Mahaffey, and the late Ray S. Curry.

June 16, 1973, he married his loving wife, Debra K. (Bennett) Curry, who survives, of Mahaffey.

Mr. Curry was Protestant by faith and a member of the Mahaffey Methodist Church.

He served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in November 1977.

Bethany “Beth” Sue Peterson, 29

Bethany “Beth” Sue Peterson, 29, Clymer, died Monday, July 25, 2011, in Grant Township, Indiana County.

She was born Oct. 2, 1981, in Indiana, the daughter of Larry G. and Glenda S. (Edwards) Peterson, who survive, of Clymer.

Miss Peterson was a member of the Marion Center First United Methodist Church in Marion Center, where she was active with the church’s music ministry. She served as the choir accompanist; played piano for Sunday services; and was a member of both the bell choir and the brass ensemble.

Kathleen "Kathie" Shepherd, 67

Kathleen "Kathie" Shepherd, 67, Punxsutawney, died Tuesday, July 26, 2011, at her residence.

She was born April 20, 1944, in Dayton, a daughter of the late Richard and Dorothy (Icher) McKain.

Aug. 7, 1987, she married Wes K. Shepherd, who survives.

Mrs. Shepherd was the regional commissioner for the New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York Scottish Highland Clan.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two aunts, Mildred and Ethel Icher.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 29, 2011, in the Rural Valley Cemetery.

John “Andy” Todd, 90

John “Andy” Todd, 90, passed from this life Sunday, July 24, 2011. 

He was born Jan. 22, 1921, in Jefferson County, a son of the late John H. and Edna Lingenfelter Todd.

Mr. Todd served in the Army Air Corps in 1942 and served in various stateside locations and on the island of Tinian until December 1945.
While in Great Bend, Kan., Mr. Todd met Arlene Notestine. After the war, he returned to Burdett, Kan., and they wed Jan. 25, 1946. She preceded him in death.

Police name victim in Sunday crash

YOUNG TOWNSHIP — Monday, police identified a Reynoldsville man as the victim in Sunday’s fatal crash at the intersection of Route 536 and Route 36 in Young Township.

According to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police, Gary Brian Travis, 48, Reynoldsville, was operating a 2006 Toyota Tacoma when he failed to stop at a posted stop sign on Route 536 and pulled out in front of a 2007 International tractor-trailer driven by Fredrick Rose, 55, Fort Wayne, Ind., which was traveling south on Route 36.

Local seniors enjoying new JCAAA center

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Senior Center isn’t gone; it’s just moved somewhere else nearby.

The building that housed the center was demolished last week to accommodate the construction of Grace Place, and the center is now located in the basement of the former Grube Hospital boiler room.

The center’s director, Tracy Miller, said she loves the new space, which has been open for two weeks and offers advantages over the former center.

Jail Board to examine possible policy review

BROOKVILLE — At the Jefferson County Jail Inspection-Intermediate Punishment Board meeting Monday, Jefferson County Jail Warden Tom Elbel asked the board to review some policies that must be updated.

According to Elbel, via a union contract, a committee meets several times a year to review polices to see where the jail is lacking and where it is not.

The committee met last week. Elbel believes that many revisions need to be made.

But because there are so many, he is asking the board to review them by next month’s meeting date, with the hope of voting on them Aug. 22.

Championship rematch starts tonight in DuBois

DUBOIS — The Rossiter Miners will have a chance at revenge as they begin the Federation League Championships against the DuBois Rockets at 6 p.m. tonight at Showers Field in DuBois.

The Miners fell to the Rockets in Game 7 of the 2010 championships, and both teams are looking for a good challenge this year.

"It's going to be a good series," Rossiter manager Rick Matthews said following Sunday's series-winner over the Brookville Grays. "DuBois got the best of us in the regular season. ... Our pitching has to step up big against them, and we need to hit the ball on their pitching, too."

Punxsutawney places third at St. Marys

ST. MARYS — Punxsutawney placed third out of 15 teams this past weekend at the St. Marys 9-& 10 year old Little League tournament.

"The two teams that were ahead of us were exceptional, but we hung right in there," Punxsy manager Mark Ewing said. "Third place out of 15 teams is pretty respectable in my eyes and the other coaches."

Punxsy began the weekend by playing three games Saturday.

Punxsy first faced Four Leaf from Clearfield and won 18-4 then immediately played Orchard Park from Buffalo, N.Y. but lost 15-11.
