Punxsy picks up wins over Curwensville

CURWENSVILLE — The Punxsy Lady Chucks seventh- and eighth-grade basketball teams each picked up wins over Curwensville in their season openers Tuesday in Curwensville.

Punxsy's 8th-grade team jumped out to a 16-6 lead in the first quarter and outscored Curwensville in each quarter, including a 10-3 run to finish the game to pick up a 45-17 win.

After his girls held Curwensville to 17 points, head coach Mike Carlson pointed to the team defense as a strength for Punxsy.

Elementary girls start the season right

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy girls' elementary basketball program kicked off its 2011 schedule with a pair of home games against Elk County Catholic Tuesday night in Punxsutawney.

In the first game, the fourth- and fifth-grade contest, Punxsy took an early lead and never looked back, picking up a 28-13 win over Elk County Catholic.

Philip E. Gerhard, 84

Philip E. Gerhard, 84, of Henderson, Neb., formerly of Weatherly, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011, in Henderson. 

He was born Aug. 6, 1927, in Hudsondale, a son of the late Robert Jonas and Florence (Smith) Gerhard.

Aug. 27, 1955, in Weatherly, he married Miriam A. Richie, who preceded him in death.

Mr. Gerhard obtained an associate’s degree in animal husbandry from Penn State. A World War II veteran, he was a longtime dairy farmer in Pennsylvania before obtaining his master blaster certificate in explosives.

Evelyn D. (Wise) McElwain, 86

Evelyn D. (Wise) McElwain, 86, of Big Run, died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011, at Brookville Hospital.

She was born Oct. 12, 1924, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Clair and Linnie (Black) Fetterman.

April 21, 1946, she married James L. Wise, who preceded her in death April 17, 1984. She then married Elmer Joseph McElwain June 13, 1998, who preceded her in death in 2001.

Mrs. McElwain worked and retired from Arco Speer Carbon in Elk Run.

She enjoyed flowers, gardening and bowling. She was a member of the American Legion Auxilliary Post 62 in Punxsutawney.

Stuby brothers insist: Painting the U.S. flag on their barn has been years in the planning

PUNXSUTAWNEY – Brothers Gordon and Lyle Stuby divided their duties when it came to painting a huge U.S. flag on the southern-facing side of a large white barn along Stuby Acres, just past Joyce’s Greenhouse along Route 119, North Mahoning Township.

“Gordon’s in charge of procurement and resources,” Lyle said. “I’m in charge of engineering and tech.”

“In other words,” Gordon added, “I’m the gopher.”

Council will seek input on Indiana Hill speed limit

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney Borough Council’s Public Safety Committee discussed the possibility of changing the speed limit on the Route 119 bridge to make it easier for traffic to slow down when traveling down Indiana Hill.

Borough Manager Ben White said PennDOT would be able to clarify a few ideas proposed by council, which include requesting that PennDOT install larger signs or large orange diamonds on signs such as those used on the Indiana bypass on Route 119.

TREKKIN’ TIME AGAIN

Hey groundhoggers, it’s that time again! No, not yet Groundhog Day, but the 113th Punxsutawney Groundhog Club Outing & Picnic, this year set for 1 p.m. until the lights are turned out Saturday at Groundhog Park and Gobbler’s Knob. In addition to a full New York strip steak dinner with all the trimmings at 4:45 p.m., the annual trek to give Punxsutawney Phil his life-extending elixir will be held around 3:30 p.m.

Punxsy cruises to 8-2 win over DuBois Central in season opener

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After leading 3-1 at halftime, the Punxsy boys' soccer team scored five goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half and went on to win 8-2 over DuBois Central Catholic.

"DuBois Central has a new coach and a few new players, and I really think they're on the verge of being a much better team this year," Punxsy head coach Phil Shenkle said. "Fortunately, we came in with several returning starters and a decent bit of offensive firepower. It was nice to see my guys get some goals today."

Varsity falls in home opener, JV picks up win

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy girls' volleyball team lost its home opener to Ridgway in three games Tuesday night in Punxsutawney.

Ridgway jumped out to an early 16-7 lead in the first game, forcing Punxsy to take a timeout.

Punxsy bounced back after the timeout, and Chelsea Engeholm went on a serving run. By the time it was over, Punxsy trailed by just four points, 18-14.

Ridgway answered back with a run of its own, though, and went on to take the first game, 25-18.

Lady Chucks fall to Brookville

BROOKVILLE — The Punxsutawney Lady Chucks soccer squad traveled through the rain Tuesday to take on Brookville in the Lady Raiders' first game of the season. Despite a strong second half start, Punxsy gave up three goals in the second half and ultimately lost 4-1.

Punxsy head coach Kevin Hughes said there were many positives he saw throughout the game.

"I thought we possessed the ball well at times; we passed well," Hughes said. "I'm happy with the intensity most of the game, but ... we need to be moving for the full 80 minutes."
