Three Chucks selected for Lezzer Lumber Football Classic

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Most graduating seniors played their final football game as a representative of the Chucks last November, but three of those now-graduated seniors have been chosen to represent Punxsutawney in the 27th-annual Lezzer Lumber Football Classic, which will take place at 7 p.m. Friday at Bald Eagle Area Alumni Field in Wingate.

PSP fire marshal: Big Run Carpet fire was arson

BIG RUN — The Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal is now treating the investigation into the cause of a fire that destroyed Big Run Carpet early Sunday as a case of arson.

Cpl. Charles Gross, Troop-C fire marshal, said the fire that destroyed the business on Thompson Street in Big Run is undetermined at this time.

Gross said he has several samples that he took from the burned-out store that have been sent to the PSP crime lab.

It must be summer: Old Home Week is next week

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A long-standing summertime tradition returns next week, as the Punxsutawney Fire Department will hold its Old Home Week Tuesday through Saturday at the carnival grounds located behind the west side of the Punxy Plaza.

Tami McFarland, president of the Old Home Week committee, said the carnival has actually been located in several different locations around town, including Maple Avenue at the baseball fields; Mahoning Street downtown; the National Guard Armory on North Findley Street; and now behind the Punxy Plaza.

East American owner offers reward after vehicle stolen from property

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The owner of East American Motorsports, Route 119, is offering a reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for stealing an expensive utility vehicle from the premises.

Brian Setree, who has owned and operated East American at its Route 119 location for 10 years, said actors stole a 2011 Polaris Ranger 800XP Limited Edition valued at $11,800.99 between 2 and 3 a.m. Wednesday morning.

More Little League All-Star brackets released

The remaining 2011 District 10 Little League All-Star brackets have been released, as Punxsy's 10- & 11-year-old baseball and softball and Senior League softball teams now know their postseason schedules.

Punxsy's Senior League softball All-Stars will play first of the three teams. They will visit Brockway Tuesday, June 28. The winner of that game will play Thursday, June 30, at DuBois.

Brookville All-Stars dimmed by DuBois, 13-9

BROOKVILLE — Despite a no-hitter thrown by Brookville's Elaina Powell, DuBois took game one of the Little League softball All-Stars tournament, 13-9, Tuesday in Brookville.

DuBois took an early lead, going up 11-4 in the fourth, but Brookville made a sixth inning push, which proved to be too little, too late.

Council asking business to stop selling bath salts

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Police and public officials are warning the public about the dangers of ingesting bath salts or smoking synthetic marijuana as a way to get high, because the results could be fatal.

Last Monday, Punxsutawney Borough Council passed a motion to send letters to all businesses in the borough, asking them not to sell either of the latest over-the-counter substances that are being used as synthetic drugs.

Borough sees more high-grass violations

PUNXSUTAWNEY — If it seems there are more people who own property in Punxsutawney who aren’t keeping up with mowing the grass this year, members of borough council would agree with you.

Code Enforcement Officer Mary McHenry said there appears to be more high-grass violations than in other years.

McHenry said in the beginning of the lawn mowing season, she was lenient due to the heavy rainfall this spring.

When people would complain about the neighbors’ grass, she would say that she wanted to make sure the person in violation had enough time to cut it, she said.
