August 25, 2011

Kimberly A. Gloden, 53, Punxsutawney, formerly of Springdale, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011, at UPMC Presbyterian, Pittsburgh.

She was born Aug. 29, 1957, in Natrona Heights, a daughter of Elsie Baksis of Springdale and the late Robert Dehus.

Ms. Gloden was affiliated with the Walston Club in Punxsutawney and enjoyed cooking, painting, motorcycles, and watching home interior and real estate shows on television.

Punxsy preparing to kick off season

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsy's girls' soccer team has one week of practice and one scrimmage under its belt, but first-year head coach Kevin Hughes still has a lot to look forward to.

Just because Hughes has the first-year label tacked onto the front of his title this year, though, doesn't mean he isn't familiar with the game and Punxsy's soccer system.

Punxsy falls in opener to tough DuBois squad

DUBOIS — The Punxsutawney girls' tennis team fell in its first match of the season to what Punxsy head coach Rose Graffius said was "one of the tougher teams that we will play" in DuBois, 9-0, Wednesday afternoon.

Despite the fact that her team was unable to win any matches, Graffius still saw some promising signs from her team, which lost several of its experienced players from last season.

"Overall, I was pleased with the team's performance, considering the lack of varsity court experience that many of the girls have," she said.

County lifts ban of burning; still urges caution

BROOKVILLE — Just a few days shy of the 30-day mark, the county-wide burn ban has been lifted.

Tuesday, the Jefferson County Commissioners lifted the ban at their regular meeting.

“The conditions have improved,” Director of Emergency Services Tracy Zents said. “The natural grass is starting to come back; it’s greening up again.”

Although the rainfall amounts have slightly improved, Zents urges residents to remain cautious.

At 2.1 inches — the county’s rainfall total average for July — this summer has been the worst since 2007.

Board and parent debate: What is graded, and what is extra-curricular?

PUNXSUTAWNEY — When is an activity at Punxsutawney Area High School considered a graded subject, and when is it considered an extra-curricular activity?

That’s the question Cheryl Hollis, mother of Karah L. Hollis, a former PAHS student, asked during the pubic comment portion of the Punxsy school board’s agenda Wednesday.

Emma P. Zimmerman, 98

Emma P. Zimmerman, 98, Punxsutawney, died Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011, at McKinley Health Care Center, Brookville.

She was born Dec. 19, 1912, in Grange, a daughter of the late Charles B. and Maggie P. (Fry) Plyler.

She was married to Walter J. Zimmerman, who preceded her in death Jan. 15, 1978.

Mrs. Zimmerman was employed as a school teacher in the Punxsutawney Area School District, and she was a member of the Progressive Study Club, the NEA and PEO, as well as a life member of the Punxsutawney Historical & Genealogical Society.

Richard Shawn Haines, 40

Richard Shawn Haines, 40, Florida, died Monday, Aug. 22, 2011, in Florida.

He was born Jan. 14, 1971, in Spangler, a son of Wanda (Bott) Fisher.
Mr. Haines was employed as a hair stylist at Fantastic Sam’s.

In addition to his mother, surviving relatives include his step-father, Willis Fisher; two sisters, Tonya Bond and husband Randy, and Amber Keith and husband Jamie, all of Punxsutawney; a step-brother, William Fisher of Punxsutawney; a nephew, Dallas Bond of Punxsutawney; his long-time companion, Billy Ferringer of Florida; an a number of aunts and uncles.

Punxsy residents agree: We felt the quake here, too

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Whether they were working, sleeping or just taking a second to enjoy the weather, several residents felt tremors from Tuesday’s 5.9 magnitude earthquake in Virginia.

The Spirit’s phone lines became quite busy after readers in the area felt tremors from the quake, which was centered around Mineral, Va., about 40 miles northwest of Richmond, Va., according to the the U.S. Geological Survey.

Police warn residents to lock vehicles following recent thefts

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney Borough Police are warning residents to lock their vehicles due to numerous thefts that have occurred recently.

Police Chief Tom Fedigan said several vehicles were entered over the last week, with numerous items taken.

Fedigan said the thefts have been occurring throughout the borough, most recently in the Elk Run section of town.

According to police, some of the items taken include cell phones, a laptop computer, GPS units, sunglasses and cash.

He urged everyone to lock their vehicles and store valuables — especially guns — elsewhere.
