Lady Chucks run season best at invitational

STATE COLLEGE — The Punxsutawney Lady Chucks cross country team headed to State College Saturday to run in the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational.

All 12 of the Lady Chucks performed their season bests to help the team place eighth overall out of 13 full teams.

"The Penn State golf course is relatively fast, and that coupled with cool weather really helped all the runners perform their best," Punxsy head coach George Wehrle said. "It was an excellent day all around."

Solid running boosts the Chucks to fifth place

STATE COLLEGE — The Spiked Shoe Cross Country Invitational was held Saturday at Penn State, and the Punxsutawney Chucks boys' team placed fifth out of 13 complete teams.

"We had a real solid showing on the Blue and White Golf Course at Penn State Saturday," Punxsy head coach John Smith said. "As a team we finished fifth with 183 points with some great performances."

Senior Dane Baker led the Punxsy squad, running the 3.1-mile course in 17:18 and placing 20th overall out of 129 total finishers.

Smith called him "very aggressive" and said it was Baker's best race time on the course.

Merrian L. Sherry, 68

Merrian L. Sherry, 68, Punxsutawney, passed away Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, at UPMC Montefiore Hospital in Pittsburgh.

She was born Jan. 23, 1943, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late John K. and Bernice L. (Shirey) Sherry.

Miss Sherry worked for Loree Footwear, starting in 1959. Later, she was employed by National City Bank for 19 years and Marion Center Bank for 11 years.

Her life revolved around her family and friends. She loved traveling and was a huge Pittsburgh Steelers fan.

DAR celebrating Constitution Week

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney chapter of the Daughters of American Revolution (DAR) would like to encourage everyone to stand up and cheer during the celebration of Constitution Week, but to also take time to learn more about this very important document.

Friday, Mayor James Wehrle proclaimed Constitution Week in Punxsy, a commemoration — that is also one of this country’s least known official observances — of one of America’s most important documents.

Punxsy High School Class of '51 reunites

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Members of the Punxsutawney High School Class of 1951 gathered this past weekend at Camp Little Leo to celebrate their 60th reunion.

More than 80 members of the class were present over the two-day celebration.

"The fellowship is really the important thing," reunion co-chairman Bob Bish said Sunday after the luncheon. "You can really see the bond in this class."

The 60th class reunion was dedicated to Margaret C. Boles, an English teacher at PHS who passed away during the class' junior year.

NEVER FORGOTTEN

The Big Run VFW Post No. 9044 held a POW/MIA remembrance ceremony Saturday, starting off with the Color Guard posting the POW/MIA flag. Gospel music was played, and the audience listened to excerpts from John McCain's account of being a POW. Everyone in attendance joined in prayer to pay tribute to the American soldiers who had to suffer as POWs, as well as and the many American soldiers whose whereabouts are still unknown.

St. Marys takes down Punxsy behind big 4th quarter

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Leading 12-6 entering the third quarter, St. Marys broke free for three big running plays that led to three touchdowns and pulled away for a 34-12 win over the Chucks Friday night in Punxsutawney.

The first big play came just two minutes into the fourth quarter on a third-and-inches. The Chucks appeared to have St. Marys quarterback David Aul stuffed at the line of scrimmage, when he bounced outside the pile and scampered 84 yards down the sideline to the Chucks' five. Three plays later, Justin Quiggle scored on a three-yard sweep to put St. Marys ahead 19-6.

Brookville Raiders fall to Moniteau, 43-21

BROOKVILLE — The Brookville Raiders hosted their home-opener Friday night and suffered a disappointing loss, 43-21, at the hands of the Moniteau Warriors.

The Raiders gave up more than 500 yards to a team that is now 3-0 on the season, and Brookville head coach Chris Dworek said he was disappointed with the overall team effort.

"These guys really upset me today, and the coaches and the coaches' office upset me, so I put out a challenge to them, and hopefully, they'll respond (today in practice) and fix some things up next week," Dworek said. "If we get to that point, I'll be happy."

Spirit views addition of new press equipment as a community investment

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Some readers will notice a difference with the newspaper, others will not.

The change, whether you’ve observed it or not: For one, the paper  may now and then consist of one section, as opposed to several eight-, six- or four-page sections.

The origin: Three new units for The Spirit’s press were installed as part of an ongoing expansion of the paper, which, over the past few months, has included the return of its job shop, a return to full local printing operations.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Yes, attorney Nicholas Lorenzo Jr. has a fine office among the houses along Millionaires’ Row, but the Punxsutawney Area Historical & Genealogical Society has also cited him for his keen story-telling about one of Punxsy’s most famous residents.
