Roy E. Elbel, 94

October 18, 2011

Roy E. Elbel, 94, Rockford, Ill., died Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011, at Willows Health Center in Rockford.

He was born Aug. 12, 1917, in Titusville, a son of the late Louis El and Florence M. (Frisbee) Elbel.

He was a 1941 graduate of Penn State University.

Mr. Elbel was a mechanical engineer and retired from Sundstrand Aviation in 1984.

He was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church and the Society of Automotive Engineers.

Surviving relatives include a sister, Ruth J. Willert of Glendora, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Betty Jean McHenry, 88

Betty Jean McHenry, 88, Brookville, died Monday, Oct. 17, 2011, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh.

She was born Oct. 31, 1922, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Edward and Effie (Hoop) Holben.

March 1, 1947, she married Robert R. Mchenry, who preceded her in death Jan. 11, 2000.

Mrs. McHenry was a member of the First English Lutheran Church.
She enjoyed her flowers.

All in a day's work: Punxsy 2nd overall

ST. MARYS — The Lady Chucks junior varsity volleyball team traveled to the home of the Elk County Catholic Crusaders for their volleyball tournament Saturday and put on an impressive show. Punxsy went 11-1 in pool play and finished second overall in the tournament.

The Lady Chucks opened pool play against Redbank earning two close victories, 25-20, 25-20. Punxsy head coach Megan Decker said it was a "sleepy, early game," and her team members didn't communicate as much as they usually do, but they did finish strong to earn the win.

Second-best for Lady Chucks at districts

ST. MARYS — The Lady Chucks tennis team met the Lady Beavers of DuBois Monday afternoon in blustery conditions at Benzinger Park in St. Marys for the District IX team championship, and DuBois won 5-0 to earn the title.

Despite the loss, Punxsy head coach Rose Graffius was happy with finishing second in the district and saw great improvement in her team throughout the year, especially since DuBois handed the Lady Chucks a 9-0 loss in their first match of the season.

Big Run not likely to hire part-time police officer

BIG RUN — Big Run Council received word at Monday's meeting that the chances of hiring a part-time police officer for the borough are pretty slim.

Big Run Mayor Joe Buterbaugh said that he spoke with Sykesville borough officials, and that the only thing they could help Big Run with is selling the borough a used police cruiser.

Buterbaugh said it's quite expensive to hire an officer.

"We'd be only foolish to think we can afford one," Buterbaugh said, adding that to begin with, the borough would have to pay for the officer to go through approximately 800 hours of training.

DUBOIS — Punxsy's seventh- and eighth-grade basketball teams played well on both sides of the ball again, using solid defense and consistent scoring from a variety of players to earn a pair of wins against the Lady Beavers in DuBois Monday afternoon.

In the eighth-grade game, Punxsy led 21-10 after three quarters and held off a late rally by DuBois to win 24-17.

"The girls played really well," Punxsy head coach Mike Carlson said after the game. "Our man-to-man defense was the best it's been all season."

Retired Punxsy firefighters recall days of old

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Nearly 50 years of firefighting came to a close for two members of the Lindsey Fire Company, who recently submitted their resignations for the purpose of retirement to Punxsutawney Borough Council.

Frank Davis and Don Ross have decided to call it a career as volunteer firefighters. Both were members of the original scuba team that formed in 1974.

Ross said he became a member of Lindsey in 1962, and was the first in his family to do so.

SS.C.D. School welcomes new principal

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Jessica Newcome got a jump start on her teaching career as soon as she graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, having majored in early childhood education.

"A friend of mine had called and said there might be a position for an aide for the day care," Newcome said Monday. "Ann (Smith, retired SS.C.D. School principal) hired me right out of college. I called about being an aide, and Ann hired me as the director."

Mamie L. (Jarbeck) Bosak, 74

Mamie L. (Jarbeck) Bosak, 74, DeLancey, died Monday, Oct. 17, 2011, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

She was born Sept. 22, 1937, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Michael and Madeline (Leba) Jarbeck.

She was married to Lawrence Bosak, who survives.

Mrs. Bosak was a homemaker and a graduate of St. Adrian Roman Catholic High School.

She was a lifelong member of St. Adrian Roman Catholic Church and a former president of its Rosary Altar Society and the church choir. She also maintained beautiful altars, as well as the church's annual festival.

Melvin E. Reasinger, 86

Melvin E. Reasinger, 86, Coopersburg, passed away Monday, Oct. 17, 2011, at his residence.

He was born in Sandy Township, a son of the late Howard and Beatrice (Reasinger) Rhodes.

He was the husband of H. LaRue (Schwartz)Reasinger, who survives, for more than 65 years.

Mr. Reasinger was employed as a master printer for Moore Business Forms for more than 40 years, until retiring in 1988.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a volunteer firefighter and fire police officer at the Coopersburg Fire Company. He also worked for the Coopersburg Ambulance.
