Stuby brothers insist: Painting the U.S. flag on their barn has been years in the planning

PUNXSUTAWNEY – Brothers Gordon and Lyle Stuby divided their duties when it came to painting a huge U.S. flag on the southern-facing side of a large white barn along Stuby Acres, just past Joyce’s Greenhouse along Route 119, North Mahoning Township.

“Gordon’s in charge of procurement and resources,” Lyle said. “I’m in charge of engineering and tech.”

“In other words,” Gordon added, “I’m the gopher.”

Council will seek input on Indiana Hill speed limit

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney Borough Council’s Public Safety Committee discussed the possibility of changing the speed limit on the Route 119 bridge to make it easier for traffic to slow down when traveling down Indiana Hill.

Borough Manager Ben White said PennDOT would be able to clarify a few ideas proposed by council, which include requesting that PennDOT install larger signs or large orange diamonds on signs such as those used on the Indiana bypass on Route 119.

TREKKIN’ TIME AGAIN

Hey groundhoggers, it’s that time again! No, not yet Groundhog Day, but the 113th Punxsutawney Groundhog Club Outing & Picnic, this year set for 1 p.m. until the lights are turned out Saturday at Groundhog Park and Gobbler’s Knob. In addition to a full New York strip steak dinner with all the trimmings at 4:45 p.m., the annual trek to give Punxsutawney Phil his life-extending elixir will be held around 3:30 p.m.

Punxsy cruises to 8-2 win over DuBois Central in season opener

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After leading 3-1 at halftime, the Punxsy boys' soccer team scored five goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half and went on to win 8-2 over DuBois Central Catholic.

"DuBois Central has a new coach and a few new players, and I really think they're on the verge of being a much better team this year," Punxsy head coach Phil Shenkle said. "Fortunately, we came in with several returning starters and a decent bit of offensive firepower. It was nice to see my guys get some goals today."

Varsity falls in home opener, JV picks up win

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy girls' volleyball team lost its home opener to Ridgway in three games Tuesday night in Punxsutawney.

Ridgway jumped out to an early 16-7 lead in the first game, forcing Punxsy to take a timeout.

Punxsy bounced back after the timeout, and Chelsea Engeholm went on a serving run. By the time it was over, Punxsy trailed by just four points, 18-14.

Ridgway answered back with a run of its own, though, and went on to take the first game, 25-18.

Lady Chucks fall to Brookville

BROOKVILLE — The Punxsutawney Lady Chucks soccer squad traveled through the rain Tuesday to take on Brookville in the Lady Raiders' first game of the season. Despite a strong second half start, Punxsy gave up three goals in the second half and ultimately lost 4-1.

Punxsy head coach Kevin Hughes said there were many positives he saw throughout the game.

"I thought we possessed the ball well at times; we passed well," Hughes said. "I'm happy with the intensity most of the game, but ... we need to be moving for the full 80 minutes."

Owner: Mary A.’s transformation to Graystone Court should be done by July

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Whatever happened to the former Mary A. Wilson Elementary School? It is transitioning into Graystone Court.

Jeff Long, owner of Graystone Court, purchased the empty school last year from the Punxsutawney Area School District and is converting it into independent living apartments for seniors 55 and older.

Long said there is a need to provide quality, affordable housing to those seeking a safe, maintenance-free home.

Committee will again look at Grace Way, Water St. parking

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The elimination of parking on Grace Way and Water Street was discussed at Tuesday’s Public Safety Committee meeting, with members agreeing to take a second look at the elimination of all parking on the two streets because of increased truck traffic.

With the construction of a brine water treatment facility adjacent to the sewage treatment plant, the increased truck traffic has been a concern of council, committee member Roger Steele said.

Sharon L. Haag, 54

Sharon L. Haag, 54, Brookville, died, Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011, at home.

She was born Nov. 1, 1956, in Erie, a daughter of the late Stanley Edward and Avis Irene (Hosbach) Klepfer.

Aug. 27, 1977, in Brookville, she married David E. Haag, who survives.
Mrs. Haag worked as an RN at Brookville Hospital in the OB Department and most recently at the Nurse Family Partnership.

She was a member of the Center Hill Community Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher and AWANA Leader. She enjoyed teaching Bible studies and previously taught pre-natal classes at Brookville Hospital.

Lady Chucks make it to Slippery Rock semis

SLIPPERY ROCK — The Punxsutawney Lady Chucks volleyball squad headed to Slippery Rock Saturday to play in an all-day tournament. The Lady Chucks made it all the way to the semi-finals before being knocked off by Knoch.

The varsity squad began in pool play, playing each team to 25 twice.

It started with Karns City, which it beat 25-11 in the first game but then lost 25-21.
