Gary Lee Cooper, 76

July 8, 2011

Gary Lee Cooper, 76, Glen Campbell, died Thursday, July 7, 2011, at Miners Medical Center, Hastings.

He was born May 20, 1935, in Sunbury, a son of the late Rev. Albert C. and Elizabeth “Betty” S. (Clark) Cooper.

Feb. 23, 1963, he married Irene C. (Androsky) Cooper, who survives, of Glen Campbell.

Mr. Cooper served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict and then with the Combat Engineers.

Carolyn B. Phillips, 84

Carolyn B. Phillips, 84, Punxsutawney, formerly of Mahaffey, passed away July 8, 2011, at Mulberry Square Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center, Punxsutawney.

She was born March 3, 1927, in Bell Township, a daughter of the late Bruce R. and Linda (Passmore) Young.

She was married to A. Ray Phillips, who preceded her in death.

Rose M. Tote, 84

Rose M. Tote, 84, Punxsutawney, passed away Friday, July 8, 2011, at Mulberry Square Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center, Punxsutawney.
Mrs. Tote was born Aug. 23, 1926, in Frostburg, a daughter of the late Sam and Ann (Yorio) Barber.

April 15, 1950, she married John J. Tote, who survives, of Punxsutawney. They were married 61 years.

She was a member of Ss. Cosmas & Damian Roman Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America and the Ladies’ Rosary Altar Society.

Mrs. Tote sang in the choir for many years.

Pennington's one-hitter propels Punxsy to king seed

DUBOIS — Two months removed from his first collegiate baseball season, Punxsy's Braedon Pennington was nearly unhittable Thursday night during the Jefferson County American Legion playoffs.

Pennington, who will begin his sophomore year at Allegany College of Maryland this fall, allowed just one hit and an unearned run during John J. Fisher Post No. 62 of Punxsutawney's 2-1 victory over DuBois at Showers Field.

DuBois piles on late, defeats Punxsy, 7-1

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Leading 2-1, DuBois added five insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning after a controversial call seemed to change the momentum, and it went on to win 7-1 in Junior League softball All-Star action Thursday in Punxsutawney.

DuBois' No. 8 hitter, Shelbie Jamison, led off the seventh with a double to the left field fence.

The next hitter, Emily Krise, hit a ground ball in the hole between the shortstop and the third baseman.

DuBois eliminates Punxsy with 13-2 win

DUBOIS — Punxsy's Little League baseball All-Stars were tied 2-2 with DuBois going into the fourth inning of the brackets' final, a rematch from earlier in the tournament, but DuBois scored 11 runs in the final three innings to cruise to a 13-2 win and claim the District 10 southern tier baseball championship.

DuBois starting pitcher Noah Schneider picked up the win, pitching four innings and allowing two runs.

Schneider allowed only three hits, struck out six and walked one.

County creates natural gas task force

BROOKVILLE — Hoping to put Jefferson County on the map, officials recently created a natural gas task force, with county Commissioner Jeff Pisarcik serving as chairman.

According to Director of Economic Development John Weible, the group is in the early stages of formation, but seeks to debut at the Pennsylvania Gas Expo 2011, which will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 21 at the IUP Kovalchick Complex in Indiana.

The purpose of the expo is to seek and bring businesses and the public together to educate and network about Marcellus Shale.

Robert Clair Campbell, 94

Robert Clair Campbell, 94, Brookville, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2011, at McKinley Health Center in Brookville.

He was born Aug. 5, 1916, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Preston and Olive (Lewis) Campbell.

He married Elizabeth (Shaffer) Campbell, who preceded him in death in 1992.
Mr. Campbell was a manager at United Refinery.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army.

Richard Wesley McKee, 59

Richard Wesley McKee, 59, Rochester Mills, died Thursday, July 7, 2011, at home.

He was born Aug. 12, 1951, in Tarentum, a son of the late Walter Gourley and Edith (Armer) McKee.

July 19, 1980, in Covode, he married Lois Wulfert McKee, who survives.

Mr. KcKee was a custodian at the Marion Center School District.
