September 20, 2011

BROOKVILLE — Punxsy needed a victory over Brookville to clinch the southern tier of the Allegheny Mountain League, and the Chucks did exactly what they needed to, defeating the Raiders 162-180 in Brookville Tuesday.

Punxsy was led to victory by Ian Miller, who was the tournament's low-medalist with a 35 including a chip-in birdie on No. 3 and another birdie on the par-five eighth hole.

Cecilia McCann gardens low to the ground, close to the earth

September 20, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — It’s a manner of gardening that works just fine for Cecilia (Wehrle) McCann, but at times, it may alarm passersby.

Given the fact that her eyesight isn’t what it used to be, she gets low to the ground, generally on her knees or lower, for a better look at the flowers she’s tending at her Liberty Street home.

“It’s hard on my legs, so I just get on the ground,” Mrs. McCann — also known as Aunt Deed, a derivative of her childhood nickname, Dee Dee Dumpling — said Tuesday. “I can’t stand up that long, and I can’t see that far anyway.”

September 20, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Over the years, there have been many high-profile fires that have heavily damaged or destroyed historic buildings in Punxsutawney, but a fire that destroyed a building Feb. 16 has taken some more of history with it.

This time, it’s a part of Clayville history.

There was the Dec. 24, 1971, fire that destroyed the Jordan Furniture Company, Freelee’s Store and other buildings along East Mahoning and North Jefferson streets, as well as a Nov. 16, 1982, fire on Thanksgiving at the Findley Hotel.

Lady Chucks fall to Brockway at home

September 19, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Trailing 4-0 at halftime, the Lady Chucks soccer team controlled the ball for most of the second half, but were unable to score, and Brockway went on to win Monday afternoon's game 7-0.

"We came out in the second half like the score was nothing to us, and we were going to score some goals," Punxsy head coach Kevin Hughes said. "Possession wise, we did dominate, but had we started out like that in the first half, it might have been a different story."

As much as Hughes liked the way his girls jumped out in the second half, he still sees lots of room for improvement.

Punxsy couple’s Web comic growing after half-million hits

September 19, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A year ago at this time, Thom and Kambrea Pratt had no idea whether their Web comic, “Shadowbinders,” would be successful.

The couple, who used to color and design characters such as Mickey Mouse, Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck for Gemstone’s Disney comics, believe the Internet is the future of comics, so they decided to post “Shadowbinders” on the Web Aug. 27, 2010.

The comic really took off this past January, which they believe is because, in part, they use social networking sites such as Facebook and the marketing site Projectwonderful to spread the word.

PennDOT: Traffic signal project back on track

September 19, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Work resumed Monday on the downtown traffic signal replacement project, with the replacement of the pedestrian curb ramps.
Kirby Starr, project manager for PennDOT, said the $1.1 million project was delayed was due to a switch to a different type of pole, which requires different anchor bolts, and was also subject to approval by PennDOT.

Starr said the traffic light project on North Findley, Pine and Torrence streets is not a part of the downtown Mahoning Street traffic light project.
