Henry J. “Guy” Brink, 84

October 20, 2011

Henry J. “Guy” Brink, 84, Glen Campbell, died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011, at the Indiana Regional Medical Center.

He was born Sept. 13, 1927, in Glen Campbell, Banks Township, a son of the late Edward “Fats” and Anna (Janocha) Brink.
April 19, 1952, he married his wife of 59 years, Charlotte C. (Hollen) Brink, who survives..

Mr. Brink served as a private in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1946 to 1947.

Clarence Eugene Swarmer, 72

Clarence Eugene Swarmer, 72, of Punxsutawney, died Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011, at home.

He was born April 19, 1939, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Robert and Margaret Bonelle (Fullerton) Swarmer.

Sept. 13, 1975, he married the former Shirley Ann Daisher, who survives.

Mr. Swarmer served his country during the Vietnam era as a U.S. Marine and later served in the Army National Guard.

He worked as a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation driver’s license examiner in Punxsutawney.

Mazie L. Weaver, 88

Mazie L. Weaver, 88, a native of Punxsutawney and resident of Fairhope, Ala., went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Monday, Oct. 17, 2011.

She was the daughter of the late Frank and Bertha Shaffer.

She was married to William C. Weaver, who preceded her in death.

Surviving relatives include a daughter, Gayle Mallory and her husband Robert; two brothers, Frank Shaffer and wife Marion, and Joseph Shaffer and wife Patricia; and two sisters, Bertha Harrold and husband LeRoy, and Frances Rowe.

Bonnie Jo (Poole) Yohe, 47

Bonnie Jo (Poole) Yohe, 47, of Brookville, died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011, at home.

She was born Sept. 10, 1964, in Indiana, a daughter of the late Robert W. and Shirley Jane (Clark) Poole Sr.

She was a 1983 graduate of Jeff Tech.

Ms. Yohe worked for Sheetz Inc. in Reynoldsville’ and Brookville for 22 years.

She enjoyed riding her four-wheeler, camping, horses and Amateur Radio. She was a jokester and was always pulling pranks on someone.  She liked everybody.

Police, PennDOT team up for school bus safety

PUNXSUTAWNEY — State and local police departments have joined forces with PennDOT District 10 and the Punxsutawney Area School District for National School Bus Safety Week and Operation Safe Stop.

The purpose is to raise public awareness about the consequences of improperly passing school buses and to reduce occurrences, said Shawn Houck PennDOT District 10 press safety officer.

Houck said school bus drivers in participating school districts will record the information of any motorists who pass their buses illegally.

Court appoints public defender to represent Thornhill

BROOKVILLE — A preliminary hearing for a Pittsburgh man that was continued Oct. 13 by District Judge Douglas Chambers will now be able to proceed following the appointment of the public defender by Jefferson County Common Pleas Judge John H. Foradora at Wednesday’s Plea & Sentence Court.

Christopher L. Thornhill, 24, faces two counts each of attempted criminal homicide; aggravated assault; recklessly endangering another person; and weapons violations stemming from the Sept. 22 shooting incident near a residence along Cranberry Alley.

Another close one: Punxsy edged on Senior Night

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy girls' soccer team honored its seniors in a ceremony prior to Tuesday night's game against Redbank Valley, and despite strong performances from many of the seniors, Redbank scored the only goal of the evening to win 1-0.

After the ceremony, the Lady Chucks seemed pumped up and ready to play, but it was Redbank that controlled the time of possession early and managed the first scoring opportunities.

Redbank's first scoring chance came in just the second minute, but Punxsy keeper Aly Dickey intercepted a cross to thwart the threat.

END OF THE LINE: CHUCKS 4TH AT REGIONALS

The Punxsy boys' golf team played in the PIAA Regional Tournament Tuesday afternoon and placed fourth of six teams. The tournament was the final one for Punxsy this year, as only the top two from regionals advanced to states. Punxsy head coach Josh Conrad said that although it would have been nice to play better than they did, he was proud of his players. "I'm definitely proud of them," he said.

They're on a roll: SS.C.D still unbeaten in October

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The SS.C.D. elementary girls' basketball program concluded a successful week — during which it went 6-0 — Friday evening in Punxsutawney by defeating Indiana's fifth- and sixth-grade teams to earn a pair of wins.

In a low-scoring fifth-grade contest, SS.C.D. held Indiana to just two points and managed to score 10 to earn a 10-2 victory.

Cassidy Reed led the way for SS.C.D. with four points, five steals and five rebounds in an all-around effort.

Police investigate burglary at Punxy Phil’s Restaurant

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A recent rash of burglaries continued in Punxsutawney when sometime late-night Monday or during the early morning hours Tuesday, someone entered and caused damage inside Punxy Phil’s Family Restaurant, 116 Indiana St.

According to police, unknown actor(s) forcibly entered the restaurant, and once inside, attempted to remove items and caused damage to property.
Punxsutawney Borough Police Chief Tom Fedigan said local residents have several options in attempting to prevent a burglary from happening at their home or business.
