PUNXSUTAWNEY — Following a week of tragedy and scandal locally and statewide, Officials with the Punxsutawney Area School District made heartfelt statements at the beginning and the end of Monday’s school board meeting.

PAHS robotics team fares well in first showing in BEST

PUNXSUTAWNEY — In the annual BOTS IQ competition, PAHS robotics students build machines to destroy or damage other robots.

But during a meeting of the Punxsutawney Area School Board Monday, the team demonstrated another robot, for the BEST competition, designed to be helpful, not destructive.

Weather Capital Robotics, the PAHS robotics team, competed against 19 other schools Oct 21-22 in the Wolverine BEST Hub 2011 Robotic competition at Grove City College, according to advisor Keith Hughes.

Dr. Lucinda Hart-González, 61

Dr. Lucinda Hart-González, 61, co-founder of Paradise Gardens and Farm, an organic farm and goat milk creamery at 2771 Paradise Rd., Reynoldsville, died Monday, Nov. 14, 2011, at her sister's home in Concord, Mass., after a six-month battle with lung cancer.

She was born March 31, 1950, in Oakland, Calif., a daughter of Dr. Edward W. and Flori (Feder) Hart.

Dr. Hart-González graduated from Niskayuna High School in Schenectady, N.Y., in 1967, and received her bachelor's degree from UMass-Boston and her master's and doctorate in sociolinguistics from Georgetown University in 1980.

Season-ending heartbreak for Brookville Raiders

CLARION — The Brookville Raiders' season came to a close Saturday after suffering a crushing 40-25 defeat at the hands of the Karns City Gremlins in the District IX Class AA semi-finals.

Following the game, the disappointment was easily seen on the face of Brookville head coach Chris Dworek, who said there were several mistakes made.

"We needed to tackle better, and the rush defense wasn't the best effort," Dworek said. "We can't fix things and get them next week; that's the brutality of the playoffs."

Big Run Carpet owner rebuilding after blaze

BIG RUN — Following a year in which his business was destroyed in an incident of arson, Jeff London, the owner of Big Run Carpet, is slowly putting the pieces back together as his store is rebuilt.

London said it took only four days from when the fire occurred early Sunday, June 19, from Monday to Thursday before he was back in business.
He had everything up and running, including two small buildings, Internet, telephone and his carpet samples, and was back in business, thanks to the generosity of the community.

PASR thanks public for ‘amazing’ support for troops

PUNXSUTAWNEY — More than 1,200 pounds of merchandise will be on the way to American troops serving in Afghanistan, thanks to the "amazing support" that area residents gave to the month-long drive sponsored by the Jefferson County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR).

Dylan N. "Shorty" Behrendt, 19

Dylan N. “Shorty” Behrendt, 19, Punxsutawney, passed away Friday, Nov. 12, 2011, in Armstrong County.

He was born Nov. 10, 1992, in DuBois, the son of Daniel Behrendt Sr., who survives, of Punxsutawney, and the late Roberta M. (Mietkiewicz) Behrendt.

He was a 2011 graduate of Punxsutawney Area High School. He was a member of the Ski Club and enjoyed dirt bikes, hunting, snowboarding and his friends. He was a loving son, brother, grandson, “Uncle Pickle” and true friend who will be greatly missed.

Sean D. McConnaughey, 18

Sean D. McConnaughey, 18, Punxsutawney, passed away Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, in Armstrong County.

He was born June 3, 1993, in Punxsutawney, the son of Brian and Dotti L. (McConnaughey) Gaffney, who survive, of Punxsutawney.

He was a 2011 graduate of Punxsutawney Area High School and a member of SS. Cosmas & Damian Roman Catholic Church.

He was employed by Proform Powdered Metals.

Sean loved skateboarding, swimming and his friends. A loving son, brother, grandson and true friend, he will be greatly missed.

Joel William Riggleman, 18

Joel William Riggleman, 18, Punxsutawney, died Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.

He was born Dec. 16, 1992 in Punxsutawney, a son of Drinda Sue (Stuchell) Smith and husband Brian of Punxsutawney, and Mitchell Allen Riggleman and wife Mary Beth of Trafford.

Mr. Riggleman was a 2011 graduate of PunxsutawneyArea High School and attended the Christian Missionary Alliance Church.

He was employed by 5 Star Frac Support Service.  He was a hard worker and spent a lot of time working.

Judith L. Tollini, 67

Judith L. Tollini, 67, Rockton, formerly of Rossiter, passed away Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011, at DuBois Regional Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 15, 1944, in DuBois, the daughter of the late George and Violet (Schrecengost) Pentz.

She married Donald Tollini, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Tollini was employed at Loree Shoe Factory and K-Mart in the accounting department.

She was a member of Saint Francis of Assisi in Rossiter and the Rossiter American Legion Auxiliary.
