Joel William Riggleman, 18

Joel William Riggleman, 18, Punxsutawney, died Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.

He was born Dec. 16, 1992 in Punxsutawney, a son of Drinda Sue (Stuchell) Smith and husband Brian of Punxsutawney, and Mitchell Allen Riggleman and wife Mary Beth of Trafford.

Mr. Riggleman was a 2011 graduate of PunxsutawneyArea High School and attended the Christian Missionary Alliance Church.

He was employed by 5 Star Frac Support Service.  He was a hard worker and spent a lot of time working.

Judith L. Tollini, 67

Judith L. Tollini, 67, Rockton, formerly of Rossiter, passed away Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011, at DuBois Regional Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 15, 1944, in DuBois, the daughter of the late George and Violet (Schrecengost) Pentz.

She married Donald Tollini, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Tollini was employed at Loree Shoe Factory and K-Mart in the accounting department.

She was a member of Saint Francis of Assisi in Rossiter and the Rossiter American Legion Auxiliary.

Punxsy Veterans' Day speaker cites ‘The unbroken line’

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the guns fell silent. The Great War which had claimed 35 million casualties was finally over.

Today marks the first time since the end of World War I that there is not a living American veteran of that conflict, said Dr. Norman A. “Chip” Hetzler, the guest speaker for the Punxsutawney Veterans’ Day service at the First Baptist Church.

Hetzler said since 1775, America has relied on its citizen-soldiers and an unbroken line of those who believe in duty, honor and country.

Appeal fails; court affirms judge’s order

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Another appeal against giving former Punxsutawney Borough Police Officer Brian Andrekovich his job back has been denied, this time by the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania.

In an order dated Thursday, Nov. 10, the Commonwealth Court said it affirmed an order by the Common Pleas Court of Jefferson County, in which Judge John Foradora ordered Punxsutawney Borough Council to rehire Andrekovich, whom council fired Nov. 3, 2009, following the death of Stephen Obbish, 48, who died in a police cruiser Aug. 15, 2009, while in Andrekovich’s custody.

Bowers: Americans cannot forget the promise to veterans

BIG RUN — As the U.S. citizens again thanked their men and women in uniform for defending America’s freedoms — sometimes paying the ultimate sacrifice — during Friday’s observance of Veterans’ Day, the guest speaker during Big Run VFW Post 9044’s annual event said Americans need to recall a promise they made a decade ago.

“A common thread we saw woven through countless stories in 2002 was of combat veterans of previous wars — especially Vietnam — reaching out with determination to young servicemen and women returning from Iraq and Afghanistan,” said William H. Bowers, a U.S.

Rudy Kos, 81,

Rudy Kos, 81, Stump Creek, died Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, at Christ the King Manor, DuBois.

He was born Dec. 17, 1929, in Central City, a son of the late Frank and Frances (Zakraisek) Kos.

July 12, 1969, he married Martha (McMains) Curley Kos, who survives, of DuBois.

Mr. Kos graduated from Sykesville High in 1948.

He worked for BFGoodrich and Rola-Jensen Corp in Punxsutawney
A veteran, he served as an Army corporal during the Korean conflict.
Mr. Kos was Catholic by faith.

 He enjoyed his family, gardening and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

From start to finish: Tourney was a success

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Another five-game schedule packed full of exciting action Thursday night concluded the girls' elementary basketball tournament at Punxsutawney Area High School in style.

Another defensive battle kicked off the final night of the tournament with the fourth- and fifth-grade Knicks defeating the Bulls 12-4.

Cassidy Reed and Grace Aikens led the way for the Knicks' offense with four points, and Mary Schwarz added two points in the winning cause.

Abby Gigliotti and Kylee Shoemaker each had two points for the Bulls.

LOCAL YOUNGSTER BAGS FIRST BUCK

Big Run resident Andy Ross bagged this impressive six-point, 128-pound buck at 4:28 p.m. Nov. 9 with a bow and arrow during mentored hunting. The deer was Ross' first of his hunting career.

Punxsutawney Area Middle School student honor veterans

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Students at Punxstawney Area Middle School held their annual Veterans’ Day assembly Thursday with Student Government President Jacob Horner, a seventh-grader, as the master of ceremonies.

“It was fun — hard speaking up there — but it felt good to show thanks to the Veterans,” he said.

The assembly began with a choral reading of “Hat’s Off,” by Alan Major’s fourth-grade class, followed by Darren Sherry’s fifth-grade class reading of “In Flander’s Field.”

William R. Baker, 76

William “Bill” Ralph Baker, 76, Smicksburg, died Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011, at Indiana Regional Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 4, 1935, in Rayne Township, Indiana County, a son of the late Royden W. and Ethel W. (Lamer) Baker.

May 19, 1956, he married the former Stella Louise Lowman, who survives.
Mr. Baker was a farmer and a school bus driver for the Marion Center School District.

He enjoyed his family and grandchildren, hunting, fishing and gun bashes. He especially liked gun shoots with his granddaughter.

He was a member of the Keystone Sportsmen's Club and the NRA.
