The $60,000 or the car? Lottery winner takes the car

January 13, 2012

DUBOIS — Reynoldsville resident Douglas Giles recently received a brand-new 2012 Ford Mustang GT for an extremely discounted rate — $5.

It was a normal day for Giles when he went into Backstreet Beer Distributor, in Reynoldsville, and bought a $5 Mustang instant lottery ticket.

He scratched off the ticket and felt the feeling that anyone who has ever bought a ticket hopes for: The excitement of winning a grand prize.
Giles had the choice between $60,000 and a brand new 2012 Mustang GT. The choice was easy for Giles.

“I’ve always wanted a Mustang,” he said.

Janocha's 13 & 10 give Punxsy fifth straight

January 13, 2012

WESTOVER — After the Harmony Owls missed a buzzer-beating shot that would have given them a win over the Punxsy boys' basketball team last season, Punxsy head coach Dirk Neal pegged Harmony — a much smaller school in Westover — a scrappy school that will play a team hard until the end. And Thursday night in Westover, the Owls gave the Chucks a run for their money, especially in the first half.

Weiss’ Punxsy Phil cartoons show all facets of Groundhog Day

January 12, 2012

MOON TOWNSHIP — You can call him THE Rick Weiss — thanks to his wife, Debe — but it might embarrass him a little bit.

Weiss, the man behind hundreds of Punxsutawney Phil cartoons, posters, postcards, banners and the model of the “Phantastic Phil!” statues in town, recalled visiting an art show during the Groundhog Festival a number of years ago, when he and his wife began talking with a person at the show.

“We introduced ourselves, and my wife said, ‘He’s the one who does the groundhog artwork,’” he recalled. “The person said, ‘Are you THE Rick Weiss?’ I’ve never lived that down.”

January 12, 2012

BROOKVILLE — From the time the child abuse allegations against former Penn State football defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky were revealed Nov. 5, prompting his arrest, Jefferson County’s director of Children & Youth Services, Brian Mowrey, has seen a spike in the number of reported child abuse cases.

According to Mowrey, in the last two months, there has been an increase in referrals to the office of Children & Youth Services — some of the highest numbers he’s ever seen.

Lady Crusaders stump Punxsy, still undefeated

January 11, 2012

ST. MARYS — Entering Wednesday night's girls' basketball game between Punxsy and Elk County Catholic, something had to give with ECC a perfect 9-0 and Punxsy riding the wave of a three-game winning streak. In the end, the Lady Crusaders did what they had to do to preserve their perfect season with a 47-29 victory.

"We just didn't match their intensity playing on the road against a very good Elk County team," Punxsy head coach Randy Reitz said after the game.

From the start, Elk County jumped out to an early lead, and at the first break, Punxsy found itself in a 12-5 hole.

Pair of Chucks earn All-State mentions

January 11, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Jan. 4, Pennsylvania Football News announced its annual PFN All-State football teams for the 2011 season, and this year, two Chucks — defensive lineman Jacob Shiock and quarterback Garrett Zimmerman — were among those named as statewide honorable mentions.

"Any time athletes are recognized for their hard work, it's a good thing," Punxsy head football coach Alan Nichol said in an interview Wednesday. "PFN is not as media-driven as some of the other awards. They're more based on opposing coaches nominations and statistics. So it's a nice honor for these guys."

The Zak Zone

January 11, 2012

In the blink of an eye last Sunday, the Steelers' season and my hopes of a seventh Lombardi trophy traveling to Pittsburgh came crashing down when Steeler Nation was "Tebowed" on a quick pass that ended the first-ever overtime game in NFL playoff history that wasn't sudden death in sudden death fashion.

Steelers fans across the nation Monday probably complained of the need for a further-revamped overtime system, while Broncos fans probably pledged their full allegiance to the new system — a sign that the way you look at a situation really does depend on whose side you call your own.
