DUBOIS — If you thought you would never see the day when all of the phone numbers in area code 814 would be completely used up, that day is just about here.
A group of cell phone and landline telephone users met on a snowy Monday at the Best Western Conference Center in DuBois to discuss the impending change for telephone users in the region from 814 to a new 582 area code. The proposal did not receive a warm reception from the approximately 75 people in attendance.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy junior-varsity boys' basketball team won eight of its final 10 games to complete the season with a 12-9 record last Friday.
The Chucks lost their final game — 45-32 to Bradford — but had won eight of nine games entering that matchup after they started the season 4-7.
The Chucks began to erase the rough start once they became more comfortable as a team.
BRADFORD — A young Punxsy junior-varsity girls' basketball team that lacked depth finished the season with a 10-10 record last Friday following a 30-23 loss in Bradford.
The Lady Chucks started 5-8, but were able to win five of their next six games to clinch a 10-win season before closing the year with a defeat at the Lady Owls.
Leland (Jim) E. Gilbert, 89, formerly of Punxsutawney and a resident at Christ the King Manor in DuBois, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, at the DuBois Regional Medical Center.
He was born Dec. 6, 1921, in Germania, a son of the late Harry and Mabel Gilbert.
In 1957, he married Shirley Deshong Gilbert, who survives.
Mr. Gilbert was an avid potato grower and farmer for more than 60 years. He loved his Farmall tractors, enjoyed hunting and loved to tell everyone he met over the years his experiences with potato growing. He also enjoyed spending time with his family.
Anthony D. Campagnola, 78, DeLancey, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.
He was born July 10, 1932, in DeLancey, a son of the late Dominic and Mary Emily (Baker) Campagnola.
He was a member of St. Adrian Roman Catholic Church and St. Joe's Polish Club of DeLancey.
Surviving relatives include a sister, Barbara Molnar and husband Frank of Chicora; and a brother, Joe Campagnola of DeLancey.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Deeley Funeral Home, Punxsutawney.
Louise J. Brosius, 87, Brookville, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011, at Jefferson Manor in Brookville.
She was born May 4, 1923, in Redbank Township, Armstrong County, a daughter of the late Ivan Donald and Hazel (Blose) Raybuck.
May 15, 1943, she married Lester O. Brosius, who preceded her in death March 17, 2009.
Mrs. Brosius was a homemaker and a member of Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church and attended Meade Chapel. She was also a member of the DAR in Brookville.

EDINBORO — A.J. Meterko led all Punxsy indoor runners with an individual eighth place finish in the 800-meter run at the Tri-State Track and Field Association Championships Saturday at Edinboro.
Meterko finished with a time of 2:04.68.
He qualified for the TSCTA State Championship meet at State College Feb. 26.
Other place winners for the Chucks included:
Boys' 4x800 relay— Meterko, Tom Wagner, Nathan Ward and Luke Fugate, 9:01.44, ninth place.
Girls' Distance Medley relay— Shannon Byerely, Alexis Young, Lauren McGarvey an Juliann Boddorf, 13:49.54, sixth place.
Glenn Edwin Behrendt, 88, Punxsutawney (Fordham), died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, at DuBois Regional Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 13, 1923, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Andrew and Elizabeth (Morgan) Behrendt.
For 67 years, he was married to Margaree (Jackie) Webb Behrendt, who survives.
Mr. Behrendt was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy.
BROOKVILLE — When he became a magisterial district judge in 1999, the soon-to-be-retired Richard Beck knew the job would be a challenge, perhaps all the more so because of his experience as a police officer.
Prior to election to district judge, Beck served as a Brookville Borough Police officer for more than 30 years. He was told from the start that the transition could be tough.
“The school told me that could be a problem,” he said. “I would have to say, no, it wasn’t, because they clued me in on that.”
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Does Punxsutawney have the land space to construct a second industrial park?
Last Monday, Punxsutawney Borough Council President Susan Glessner said the borough hopes to once again partner with the Punxsutawney Regional Development Corporation (PRDC) in the interest of industrial development.
Glessner recently spoke with PRDC President Frank Roberts, who said the group wants everyone to know that it has money available for industrial development. However, there are limits to $50,000, in addition to the borough’s economic development loan fund.
