BIG RUN — It’s no surprise, when one thinks of it.
John London, Big Run’s official “Frog Man,” said Tuesday, “If you take all those dates, add them up and divide and look at the average ... the average date is March 19, which is very close to the first day of spring.”
Tuesday morning, London reported that his friend, Bob Fisher, heard the peepers in the Big Run swamp peeping around 9:30 p.m. Monday, March 12 — just eight days before the official first day of spring, March 20.
“He said they peeped last night, but didn’t croak,” London said.

Borough Manager Ben White said at Monday’s Punxsy Borough Council meeting that the last of the curb ramps will be constructed this week.
Power Contracting will also resume installing the new traffic signals in preparation for activation within the next few weeks, he said.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — During the warmer months, many residents of Punxsy enjoy a tranquil evening walking on the Mahoning Shadow Trail. But many do not know that maintenance for the trail is a year-long, ongoing project.
The Mahoning Shadow Trail is the Punxsy chapter of the Rails-to-Trails Association, which runs along Mahoning Creek for most of the trail, and passing many scenic sites along the way, such as the coke ovens.
As many know, Rails-to-Trails is a nationwide project that turns old railroads into trails for users to walk, run, bike or cross-country ski.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — As it continues work on the 2012-13 budget, members of the Punxsutawney Area School Board continue to brain-storm ways to cut expenditures and increase revenue, and a historically-unpopular idea was again raised Monday.
Board member Jack White again suggested consolidating elementary schools, saying there is plenty of space to house what he referred to as 190 students, even after closing a building or two.
March 3, Punxsy hosted the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling (PJW) Area V, Section III qualifier tournament, and 14 of 19 Punxsy participants advanced to the Area V finals, which will be held Saturday at Clarion University. Area V consists of 21 schools, which are mostly the same as District IX at the high school level, with the exception of Marion Center. Section III includes Punxsy, Clarion, Keystone, Marion Center and Redbank Valley. The top two grapplers at each weight class Saturday will advance to the state finals, which will be held at Hershey Park Arena March 23-24.
MONROEVILLE — As the first-quarter buzzer sounded, Brookville's Zane Hackett sunk a career achievement: His 1,000th career point.
"It means a lot to me," Hackett said following the game. "I think a lot of it you can attribute to the coaching staff, putting in the extra hours. I owe coach (Dan) Cable and coach (Bud) Baughman a lot. ... A big thanks goes out to all my teammates. Without them, it would've never happened."
Hackett entered Saturday afternoon's PIAA opening round playoff game against Sto-Rox with 993 points.
COOLSPRING — The mild winter weather the area has been experiencing brought out numerous anglers plagued with spring "fishing fever" who assisted with stocking of Little Sandy Creek located in Coolspring Friday.
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission's (PFBC) white trout trucks made their traditional run from Bellefonte to various fishing spots this past Friday with the season scheduled to open at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 14.
March 31, trout waters in the southeastern portion of Pennsylvania will hold their opening.
BIG RUN — Five people were injured around 4 p.m. Saturday in a wreck along Route 119 in Big Run near Mitchell Street, according to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police.
Police said Dylan Irwin, 19, Punxsutawney, was traveling south on Route 119, and Jodi Campbell, 31, Punxsutawney, was traveling north when, for unknown reasons, Irwin was traveling in the opposite lane of travel and failed to enter back in the appropriate lane prior to impacting Campbell's 2003 gold Cadillac Escalade.
