House OKs Smith’s bill to trim state Legislature

April 4, 2012

HARRISBURG — The state House voted Wednesday 140-49 to cut its own ranks from 203 to 153, and to reduce the number of senators from 50 to 38.

“I believe that by reducing the size the House, it will make the legislative process more efficient, because members would communicate better and understand the other person’s problem,” said Speaker of the House Sam Smith (R-Jefferson/Armstrong/Indiana), who authored the bill. “And I think that will create better legislation at the end of the day.”

With 253 members, the Pennsylvania General Assembly is the second-largest in the country.

April 3, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — On another perfect day for a track meet weather-wise, Punxsy hosted the boys' track teams from Altoona and Brookville, and despite being out-powered by the Lions, 128-22, Punxsy picked up a dual win over the Raiders, 98.5-51.5.

While the team score didn't look so good against Altoona, Punxsy head coach John Smith said their well-tuned team overshadowed a lot of individual performances for the Chucks.

The Brookville meet was the closest, with Punxsy being edged 81-69.

Chucks picking up the pace, down Bison

April 2, 2012

Punxsy's offense was productive, and the Chucks took advantage of a few well-timed errors by the Bison, including two attempted pickoff plays which led to Punxsy runs, to put up their 12 runs.
