Tennis squad battles back for win over Bison

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After looking as if it was starting to come into its own Saturday and Monday with a pair of 9-0 sweeps over DuBois Central Catholic and Johnsonburg Saturday and Tuesday, respectively, the Punxsy boys' tennis team found itself in a bit of a hole after dropping the top three singles matches against Clearfield Wednesday in Punxsutawney.

But down 0-3, the Chucks never showed any signs of quitting, and they rallied to win the last six contested matches to earn a 6-3 victory.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The future of PAHS athletics lies in the junior high ranks, and if Monday's junior high boys' track meet is any indication, Punxsy's track program has a bright future. The Chucks played host to Elk County Catholic and DuBois Wednesday afternoon in the season's final home meet and picked up a pair of convincing victories, 110-39 over ECC and 84-65 over DuBois.

In the Elk County dual, Punxsy was especially dominant on the track, outscoring the Crusaders 72-14.

Elk County managed just one first-place finish in the 11 track events.

The Zak Zone

Sitting around the dinner table at a family dinner hosted by my grandparents Sunday afternoon, the topic of cheating came up.

Despite the different sports news surrounding cheating lately, though, it wasn't any of the NFL scandals that brought the topic to the forefront. In fact, I was the culprit.

I was telling a story about my brother chasing me through the front yard when we were children after a game of baseball went wrong, playing the victim card quite well. My family knows me too well, though, and my aunt asked, "Well, how badly were you cheating to cause him to do that?"

COVODE — It happened all over again — for the third time in three years — as another truck rolled over in the same exact location on Route 119 in Covode, when the driver of the tractor-trailer took the curve in Covode too fast and rolled up onto Randy Shultz’s front yard around 7:40 p.m. Wednesday.

Shultz said he has lived on Route 119 at the curve for three years, and not only do the trucks roll over into his yard, the cars do, too.
