PUNXSUTAWNEY â A home run by Ligonier Valley's Kristen Gabelt stood as the only run during her team's 1-0 victory over the Punxsy softball team during a rain-shortened five-inning game Friday at Harry Noerr Field in Punxsutawney.
Ligonier (18-1) scored seven times in the top of the sixth inning, but with two outs, two runners on base and a 2-2 count on Lizzie Newhouse during that inning, lightning paused the game.
Punxsutawney Area High School baseball standout Devin Mesoraco completed a successful week with a 4-for-5 game Friday with the Cincinnati Reds' Class AAA affiliate Louisville Bats.
Mesoraco improved his batting average to .295 on the season following a 7-for-23 (.304) week. During the week, he had three extra-base hits, including his first home run since the first week of the season.
Saturday, he was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two walks.

PUNXSUTAWNEY â Although they have not sponsored billboards or painted their automobiles with scripture verses or distributed tracts, a number of area ministers realize that there are people in the United States and around the globe, who earnestly believe that May 21 will be Judgment Day, when Christ returns to gather the faithful before the end of the physical world occurs in October.
SYKESVILLE â A fire in Sykesville caused heavy damage to a house owned by Jeremy Sedor, 400 Maryâs Alley, Wednesday evening.
Sykesville Fire Chief Kevin Yamrick said the fire began around 11 p.m. in a shed adjacent to the house and quickly spread to the house, causing heavy damage to the interior.
Sedor, who is the Sykesville Fire Department assistant chief, said he, his son Jordan and dog Dozer were asleep in the house when his neighbor, Brian Sharpe, noticed smoke coming from the shed when he let his dog out around 11 p.m. Sharpe then banged on Sedorâs door to alert him.

PUNXSUTAWNEY â The Punxsy boys' tennis team lost its final match of the season Thursday, 5-4 in DuBois, but the Chucks completed the year with a 6-5 record, which was an improvement over last year's 4-8 mark.
Punxsy went from a 4-8 team in 2010 that had no upperclassmen to a squad that finished above .500 in 2011.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â Randa Depp pitched her third-straight shutout, Hannah Neal hit a two-run home run, and the Punxsy softball team avenged an earlier loss when it defeated State College Thursday afternoon at Harry Noerr Field, 5-0.
"We wanted to exact a little revenge (on State College)," Punxsy manager Alan Pifer said. "We were flat over there when we played them. We were pumped up today."
PUNXSUTAWNEY â The Punxsy baseball team scored early and often to climb back to .500 with a 16-1 victory in four innings over DuBois Central Catholic Thursday at Rich Kuntz Memorial Field.
Punxsy (7-7) scored 10 times during the first two innings before it finished off the Cardinals with one run in the third and five in the fourth.
The Chucks snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory. DCC fell to 0-10 on the season.
"It was kind of workmanlike," Punxsy manager Mike Dickey said. "We did what we needed to do."
PUNXSUTAWNEY â As written on the family chalk board in the den, âDream Bigâ has always been the motto for Kerri Presloid.
After winning Penn State-DuBoisâ B.I.G. (Business Ideas Gone Wild) competition in 2009, Presloid has been able to begin her dream of becoming an entrepreneur. The idea she submitted to the competition was a childrenâs game entitled âTreasure!â which is intended to help each player learn letter recognition while collecting the treasure of gold coins.
The game âTreasure!â has several ways to play for different age levels, from advanced toddler to kindergarten.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â Because National Hospital Week is a celebration of people, Punxsutawney Area Hospital is honoring its employees by recognizing the role each of them plays in extending a sense of trust to their patients and members of their community.
âA hospital is more than a place where people go to heal, it is a part of the community that fosters health and represents hope,â hospital CEO Dan Blough said. âFrom providing treatment and comfort to the sick, to welcoming new life into the world, hospitals are central to a healthy and vibrant community.â
