A couple of months ago, council asked him to move forward with an estimated cost to upgrade Dinsmore Avenue, one of the last two brick covered streets in the borough. The other brick- covered road is Grace Way.

Paradise Gardens & Farm owner refutes drilling in honor of wife, nature

May 10, 2012

REYNOLDSVILLE — Thursday, Dr. J. Stephen Cleghorn staged a little rebellion of his own, but it was an emotional one.

“Now I feel empowered by a bond of love,” he said following an event he hosted Thursday on his Paradise Gardens & Farm. “No drill will ever penetrate this land, and I’m prepared to stand behind that.”

Cleghorn’s rebellion came with a declaration without weapons, and as well as with the spirit of his No. 1 confederate — his wife, Dr. Lucinda Hart-González, who died of cancer in November 2011.

Punxsy walks off after trading leads with DuBois

May 9, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A six-inning pitcher's duel between Punxsy starter Randa Depp and DuBois starter Samantha Kirk got messy — as did the field — when the skies opened up and the rain made it difficult to pitch Wednesday afternoon in Punxsutawney.

But after a lengthy delay, the Lady Chucks made it worth the wait with Ivy Phillips scoring after a single by Mary Sloniger to give Punxsy a 9-8 victory in nine innings.

Phillips led off the inning with a single back up the middle, but after a failed sacrifice bunt attempt, she was still at first with one out.

Chucks tennis finishes runner-up at team districts

DUBOIS — With a different format at the District IX Team Championships, the Punxsy boys' tennis team came just one point short of a D-IX title, falling to the Beavers of DuBois 3-2.

With no players repeating, Punxsy's first point came at No. 2 singles, where Tim Pearce downed DuBois' Matt Fultz 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.

Then, at No. 1 singles, Punxsy's top pair for the day — and a probable pairing heading into District IX doubles finals next week, Eddie Serafin and Nick Roberts — earned a convincing 6-2, 6-3 win over Colton Ames and Aaron Lines.

The Zak Zone

May 9, 2012

Over the course of the past week-and-a-half, I've been doing a lot of thinking about dandelions.

I suppose lot of us have had dandelions on the brain over that time period given the fact that it is grass cutting season, and dandelions have caused much more frequent mowing than is usual due to their persistent growth and unappealing visual nature once they turn from flower to seed pod.

And with it being dandelions' prime growth season, some of us have even been fortunate enough to cut our lawns more than once in a week to keep them from looking similar to undiscovered jungles.
