One win away: LLSB All-Stars cruising through Sectionals

July 4, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Coming out of a difficult district — where it had to face fellow powerhouses DuBois and Warren — Punxsy's Little League softball All-Stars know they were lucky to have such solid competition.

And Tuesday and Wednesday, in the Section 1 Tournament hosted by Punxsutawney, the home squad showed the benefit of playing the stout competition early in the tournament with a pair of fairly comfortable wins over Franklin Tuesday and McLane Wednesday.

The Zak Zone

July 4, 2012

The mid-summer heat that has been smothering the area over the past week or so is an obvious reminder: We are in the midst of the dog days of summer.

And with All-Star baseball and softball in full swing — congrats to the 11- and 12-year-old softball team on its run to the Section 1 final already and good luck to the numerous other teams still competing — and the Legion and Fed League schedules nearing playoff time, baseball is heavy on my mind.

July 4, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — For a few hours during the Groundhog Festival, the event simply went to the dogs, as Michelle’s Magical Poodles performed several shows for the crowd.

Michelle Harrell’s four poodles — Blondie and Pirouette, both 11; Apollo, two; and Emilio, six — entertained guests by jumping through hoops, making figure-eights, rescuing stuffed toys from a mailbox and interacting with children.

Harrell, of Gulf Breeze, Fla., not only displayed her dogs’ tricks, but sought to illustrate that it is good to interact with one’s pet at home to help keep them active and healthy.

It's good to be king: Punxsy LLBB keeps rolling

DUBOIS — This year's 11- and 12-year-old baseball All-Star team returns 11 players from the squad that lost its first game and battled back to win the 10- and 11-year-old District X title last year, and Monday night in DuBois, the Punxsy team showed it learned its lesson last year — that it was difficult to battle back out of the losers' bracket.

Grays best Miners in battle atop Fed League standings

July 2, 2012

BROOKVILLE — With the regular season winding down, the Rossiter Miners, Brookville Grays and DuBois Rockets are in a tough battle for the top three playoff slots. With the Miners' 5-2 loss to the Grays Monday night, they now have a 12-6 record that will most likely place them as the third seed.

The Grays improved to 14-5, putting them one loss behind the Rockets (14-4).

The Miners were able to grab a run early in the contest but were unable to build any type of scoring momentum.
