Punxsy walks off after trading leads with DuBois

May 9, 2012

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A six-inning pitcher's duel between Punxsy starter Randa Depp and DuBois starter Samantha Kirk got messy — as did the field — when the skies opened up and the rain made it difficult to pitch Wednesday afternoon in Punxsutawney.

But after a lengthy delay, the Lady Chucks made it worth the wait with Ivy Phillips scoring after a single by Mary Sloniger to give Punxsy a 9-8 victory in nine innings.

Phillips led off the inning with a single back up the middle, but after a failed sacrifice bunt attempt, she was still at first with one out.

Chucks tennis finishes runner-up at team districts

May 9, 2012

DUBOIS — With a different format at the District IX Team Championships, the Punxsy boys' tennis team came just one point short of a D-IX title, falling to the Beavers of DuBois 3-2.

With no players repeating, Punxsy's first point came at No. 2 singles, where Tim Pearce downed DuBois' Matt Fultz 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.

Then, at No. 1 singles, Punxsy's top pair for the day — and a probable pairing heading into District IX doubles finals next week, Eddie Serafin and Nick Roberts — earned a convincing 6-2, 6-3 win over Colton Ames and Aaron Lines.

The Zak Zone

May 9, 2012

Over the course of the past week-and-a-half, I've been doing a lot of thinking about dandelions.

I suppose lot of us have had dandelions on the brain over that time period given the fact that it is grass cutting season, and dandelions have caused much more frequent mowing than is usual due to their persistent growth and unappealing visual nature once they turn from flower to seed pod.

And with it being dandelions' prime growth season, some of us have even been fortunate enough to cut our lawns more than once in a week to keep them from looking similar to undiscovered jungles.

Senate’s cuts to Corbett’s budget offer some good news

May 9, 2012

BROOKVILLE — The Pennsylvania Senate’s vote to approve a $27.65 billion spending plan Wednesday indicates a more hopeful outcome for the state’s human services field.

The budget bill, which was approved on a vote of 39-8, restores around $500 million in cuts to education, social services and other areas proposed by Republican Gov. Tom Corbett in his $27.14 billion proposal.

The measure will now be sent to the state House.

“It’s good to see from my perspective that negotiations have at least begun,” Jefferson County Children & Youth Services Director Brian Mowrey said Wednesday.

Chucks stay with Owls on track, fall short

May 8, 2012

BRADFORD — Despite a strong showing on the track after a long trip to Bradford Tuesday afternoon, the Chucks track and field team fell to a worthy opponent in the Owls, 90-60, in their final regular season meet.

Punxsy head coach John Smith said he was pleased with his team's effort, adding that a few key pieces on the field were ailing, which can make a big difference in swinging the points.

Lady Chucks bested by Bradford in finale

May 8, 2012

BRADFORD — After a convincing win over Redbank Valley last Monday, the Punxsy girls' track team struggled Tuesday afternoon in its final tune-up meet before the District IX Championships next Wednesday at Kane in a 115.5-33.5 loss to the Lady Owls in Bradford.

Despite the tough loss, Punxsy head coach Barry Young told his squad there was just one thing it needed to do: Move on.

"I just told them we need to let well enough alone, forget this meet and move on to preparing for districts," he said.
