WE’RE OUTTA HERE!

Students at Mapleview Elementary School boarded the bus for the last time this school year. Both students and staff were all smiles as they headed home to begin their summer vacations. School is officially out for summer for the entire Punxsutawney Area School District.

Mary Y. Anibaldi, 92

Mary Y. Anibaldi, 92, Punxsutawney, died Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at Jefferson Manor, Brookville.

She was born Dec. 31, 1919, in Slickville, a daughter of the late Michael and Dorothy (Lopey) Chester.

May 6, 1943, she married Robert J. Anibaldi, who preceded her in death May 9, 2007.

She was a member of Ss. Cosmas & Damian Roman Catholic Church of Punxsutawney.

Mrs. Anibaldi worked as a floor supervisor for Pramco, and she enjoyed baking, cooking and collecting antiques.

She loved her pet bird.

Council votes 6-1 to override mayor’s veto

PUNXSUTAWNEY — During a special meeting Wednesday, Punxsutawney Borough Council voted to override Mayor James Wehrle’s veto of the change in Ordinance 1120 in regard to allowing apartments in first-floor commercial establishments in the town center commercial district.

A motion was made by Michelle Lorenzo, seconded by Mike Porada, to override Wehrle’s veto 6-1, with Lorenzo, Porada, council President Larry Chenoga, Jaime Sherry, Toby Santik and William Spencer voting yes, and Eric Story voting no.

SCHOOL’S OUT AT SS.C.D.

That roar you heard at noon Wednesday was the sound of the students at SS.C.D. School being dismissed for summer vacation. Joyous students exited the building as the first few moments of summer vacation officially began.

New school lunch rules take effect July 1

PUNXSUTAWNEY — School lunches will again receive a bit of a makeover, as the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Healthy Hungry-Free Kids Act takes effect July 1.

During the Punxsutawney Area School Board’s committee meeting Wednesday, district Cafeteria Manager Denise Geist gave the board a preview of the new guidelines, which, according to the USDA, “align school meals with the latest nutrition science and the real world circumstances of America’s schools.”

Number 9 feels mighty fine: Chucks down St. Marys for D-IX title

BROCKWAY — Jamie Bush pitched a gem of a game; Ty Zimmerman homered to help Punxsy to a five-run first inning; and when all the pieces fell together, the Chucks earned a 6-0 victory over St. Marys to be named the District IX Class AAA champion for the ninth year running.

For a team that had a lot of question marks entering the season, Punxsy head coach Mike Dickey said this was "a tremendous accomplishment."

Punxsy downs Lady Dutch to earn fifth-straight D-IX crown

BROCKWAY — For the fifth year in a row, the Lady Chucks' softball team is the District IX Champion, having defeated the Lady Dutchmen 7-1 in Brockway Wednesday.

On winning the title, head coach Alan Pifer said, "It's fantastic. We beat a quality team there; they're a top notch program."

The Lady Chucks were firing on all cylinders with a combination of good pitching, fielding and hitting that showcased the talent the girls possess.

No matter how you say it, there is nothing more exciting for a sports fan than an elimination game — and nothing more gut-wrenching if it's your team that's putting it all on the line in the go or go home fashion.
Wednesday, two PAHS teams competed in do or die fashion against the St. Marys squads at their respective District IX Championship games in Brockway: The softball team and the baseball team.

Gladys Louella McQuown, 94

Gladys Louella McQuown, 94, Frederick, Md., formerly of Punxsutawney, passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2012, at Homewood at Crumland Farms in Frederick after a long, courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease.

She was born Jan. 5, 1918, in Bell Township (Albion), a daughter of the late William H. and Emma (Sankey) Bargerstock Buck.

She was a 1936 graduate of Punxsutawney High School, and in 1939, she married Samuel McQuown, who preceded her in death in 1988.

Heavy storm brings heavy call volume at 911 Center

BROOKVILLE — The Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency said Sunday’s severe thunderstorm affected everyone in the county and left several hundred people without power, downed trees and power lines throughout the county and region.

Meanwhile, another storm struck the area again Tuesday, but this time, the damage from high winds appeared to have affected the northern portions of Jefferson County according to 911 scanner reports.
