Strong membership drives Punxsy Lions Club

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Lions Club honored several of its members at a recent dinner.

The club is 67 years old, founded Jan. 4, 1945, and is still going strong at Camp Little Leo in Bell Township, said President Mike Ruffner.

Joe Molitierno, first vice-president and past governor, said Lions Club International has been around since 1917.

The 59-member Punxsy club is the only one in the area that meets year-round, while most of the other clubs take the summer off, Ruffner said. Secretary Denny Rebuck said membership is by invitation only from a current club member.

Ridin' Shotgun performs at Music in the Park

It’s a good thing for that canopy ... When the rain crept into Barclay Square Thursday evening, guests pulled their chairs close to the stage to dodge the drops, while others had umbrellas on hand. Nevertheless, the rain did not chase the second installment of Music in the Park indoors, as the featured band, Ridin’ Shotgun, kept the crowd entertained despite the elements.

Joseph Gresock Jr., 90

Joseph Gresock Jr., 90, of Tonawanda, N.Y., passed away at home July 12, 2012.

A committal service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 21, 2012, at Ss. Peter & Paul Byzantine Cemetery, near DeLancey, with Fr. Ronald Larko, nephew of Mr. Gresock, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in his memory to the American Cancer Society or Erie County (N.Y.) Hospice.

Judith M. Lott, 71

Judith M. Lott, 71, Alexandria, Va., died July 7, 2012, in West Chester, Ohio.

She was born July 20, 1940, in Henderson Township, a daughter of the late Bernard and Rachel (Pifer) Lott.

Miss Lott lived in the Washington, D.C., area the majority of her adult life and was employed at various locations with the federal government from 1958 until retiring in 1995 as a budget analyst with the Federal Railroad Administration, Department of Transportation.

Miners can't handle Grays' power, drop Game 3

BROOKVILLE — The Rossiter Miners could not keep the Brookville Grays off the bags in their 11-4 loss Wednesday night in Brookville. In a game that saw 10 hits and three home runs from Brookville, there was little Rossiter could do to cool down the Grays' hot bats.

"They (Brookville) just hit the ball tonight, what can I say, the better team won; could be all different tomorrow," said Jim Dunlap, Miners manager.

This time of year, my focus has usually turned to football season, as my beloved Pittsburgh Pirates have usually been statistically eliminated from the playoffs. And while this year is much different, and the battlin' Buccos are still dancing atop the National League Central standings, I'm starting to feel a little bit of the football itch.

Chief: No injuries in Ridge Avenue fire

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal is investigating a fire that heavily damaged the second floor of a Ridge Avenue home at 6:34 a.m. Wednesday.

The three-story house is owned by Eugene McCorle, and had heavy smoke showing from the second floor when firefighters arrived on scene, said Bryan Smith, Punxsutawney Fire Department chief.

Smith said the house was rented by Phil and Nicole Morrow, two adults and three children, and there were family members at home when the fire broke out.

Punxsy native to command Troop C

HARRISBURG — A long-time trooper and Punxsutawney native has been promoted among the ranks of the Pennsylvania State Police.

Monday, State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan reported the promotion of Bernard J. Petrovsky, of Indiana, to captain.

Petrovsky has now been assigned to serve as commanding officer of Troop C, Punxsutawney.

Petr-ovsky, 52, most recently served as the criminal investigation section comm-ander for Troop C.

New publishing group celebrates book launch for local author

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A new Punxsutawney-based publishing company, Unknown Authors LLC, will host its first-ever book launching event to honor one of its own, Dee Lyle, on the first printing of her children’s book, “Running With Miles.”

The book launching will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Walston Club, where state Rep. Sam Smith will honor Lyle on her noteworthy accomplishment.
