Chucks look to be resilient against big-play Beavers

PUNXSUTAWNEY — When facing a big play, high-powered offense in sports, you have to be able to take a punch, hold your ground and fight back. The Punxsy Chucks will need this type of resilience tonight when facing the DuBois Beavers' potent squad.

“It has been a good week of practice. The players are determined to play well, which makes really makes it enjoyable coaching them,” proclaimed Chucks head coach Alan Nichol. “We will have to be a resilient squad as we will have to be able to come back and focus on our job after DuBois makes a play and take good care of the ball on offense.”

Punxsy finishes strong, overpowers Curwensville

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After splitting the two opening games, Punxsy finished strong to overpower Curwensville in the second two contests for the 3-1 victory Thursday night.

The Lady Chucks came back from a big first game deficit to capture a 25-21 win, only to see the Lady Tide edge the second contest, 22-25. Punxsy came on strong the rest of the night to overpower Curwensville in the deciding next to games, 25-14 and 25-15.

DCC eases past Punxsy in girls’ soccer

PUNXSUTAWNEY – After not being able to capitalize on an energized start, Punxsy saw DuBois Central ease past it for the 5-0 girls’ soccer victory Thursday in Punxsutawney.

“We let them (DCC) get into a rhythm and we got out of ours,” said Lady Chucks coach Kevin Hughes.

The Lady Chucks started out strong with a lot of energy and were taking the game to the Lady Cardinals but could not capitalize on the charge.

DCC reversed the fortune and were able to find the net four times in the opening 40 minutes of action for a 4-0 intermission lead.

Glen Campbell man killed in early morning collision with coal truck

BANKS TOWNSHIP — The Indiana County Coroner’s office confirmed the death of a local man Thursday morning as the result of a motor vehicle accident.

Coroner Mike Baker said 22-year-old Stephen Robert Yamrick of Glen Campbell was killed when the Dodge Ram pickup truck he was driving reportedly crossed the center line of Route 36 in Banks Township and collided head-on with an oncoming coal truck as the victim was en route to work Thursday morning.

Baker said the collision resulted in the ignition of diesel fuel from the coal truck, causing both vehicles to become engulfed in flames.

Wehrle signs Constitution Week proclamation

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Thursday morning, Punxsutawney Mayor James Wehrle — accompanied by members of the Punxsutawney chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) — signed a proclamation announcing that the week of Sept. 17-22 is to be held as Constitution Week in Punxsutawney.

Wehrle cited both local and national ties to the declaration, announcing that DAR is a very special organization nationally; that Constitution Week is a very special week in American history; and that the people of Punxsutawney are very proud of DAR.

Young Township doing its part to continue recycling

YOUNG TOWNSHIP — The Young Township Board of Supervisors held its monthly voting meeting Wednesday.

At the meeting, supervisors decided to take action to help the Jefferson County Solid Waste Authority.

Board Chairman Andrew R. Meterko spoke of the committee's efforts.

"We hate to see the recycling bins leave; our’s is used frequently by the borough, so we want to do our part," he said.

To prevent recycling centers from closing and to help defray costs in the area, Young Township will give $1,200 twice at year.

Ellen J. Strouse, 77

Ellen J. Strouse, 77, of West Weber Avenue, DuBois, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012, at her residence surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on April 8, 1935, in Soldier, Pa., a daughter of the late William and Martina (Sloan) Leiberton.

On Aug. 3, 1963, in Reynoldsville, she married Paul P. “Hawkey” Strouse. He preceded her in death in 2006.

Mrs. Strouse worked for Shop-n-Save for 10 years and the Litts Club for 20 years.

She was a member of the St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, where she was one of the original members of the Ladies of Saint Joseph.

Erma N. Wolfe, 81

Erma N. Wolfe, 81, of Timblin, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

She was born Nov. 25, 1930, in Arizona, a daughter of the late Loyd Whitsell and Carrie (Dinger) Whitsell.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis L. Wolfe.

Erma was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church.

She enjoyed crafts, yard sales and spending time with her grandchildren.

Chucks avenge early defeat, down Raiders

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After suffering the first defeat to Brookville in six years earlier this season, the Punxsy boys' golfers prevailed over Brookville to avenge the loss, 178-187 on the Punxsutawney Country Club's front nine.

The Raiders took the first meeting on Aug. 22nd in Brookville by five strokes, 167-172.

The two rivals saw their top golfers tie for the best round. Punxsy's Mike Blose and Brookville's Jack Huggins both shot a 41 for the par-37 course.

7th- and 8th-grade squads down Brookville to stay perfect

BROOKVILLE — The 7th grade Lady Chucks' basketball team improved its record to 3-0 with an impressive 29-8 win over rival Brookville Lady Raiders Tuesday night.

"It was a team effort, we were looking for everybody and looking for the open girl. With this team it doesn't matter who scores, they're always looking to find the other person," said Punxsy coach Darrin Kriebel.
