Blair O. “Dick” Richards, 88

January 19, 2015

Blair O. “Dick” Richards, 88, of Bell Township, died Jan. 17, 2015, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

He was born March 30, 1926, in Sportsburg, a son of the late Violet (Ball) and James Richards.

He was a member of the Sportsburg United Methodist Church and the Perry Township Sportsman’s Club.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He loved hunting, fishing, traveling and spending time with family and friends.

Blair worked at Metals Protection, Barletta’s Warehouse, and he retired from the Maintenance Department at Punxsutawney Area School District.

Phyllis G. Lute, 72

Phyllis G. Lute, 72, of Punxsutawney, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2015, at UPMC - Shadyside in Pittsburgh.

She was born March 23, 1942, in Farrell, Pa., the daughter of the late George T. and Helen (Kucharski) Koshar.

She was married to Leland Ray Lute, who preceded her in death on Sept. 23, 1975.

She was a homemaker and worked as a cook at the Lane Avenue Personal Care Home.

She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxillary.

Mildred I. Johnston, 89

Mildred I. Johnston, 89, of Punxsutawney, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015, at DuBois Nursing Home.

She was born March 7, 1925, in Bradford Township, Clearfield County, a daughter of the late Laura (Graham) and John Shomo.

On Oct. 7, 1940, she married Merle E. Johnston, who preceded her in death in May of 1984.

She was a member of the Chestnut Grove Independent Church.

She enjoyed going to church, cooking, baking, doing puzzles and reading.

Punxsutawney Area Running Club getting off its feet

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Do you enjoy running? Is it something that gives you great enjoyment?

Then, perhaps you might want to consider joining the Punxsutawney Area Running Club.

Alena Gourley said the idea of a running club came from Facebook.

"I am part of a Facebook group where most people are from DuBois, and they post about group runs often, and I had actually driven there to join in.

Last year was the first time I had a running partner and loved how we were able to motivate each other through the dreary winter months," she said.

Punxsy sweeps Bradford in basketball action

On Friday night, the Lady Chucks played host to the Lady Owls of Bradford, while the Punxsy boys' team made the long trek to Bradford to take on the Owls.

In both contest, Punxsy came out victorious — with the girls earning a 55-25 victory and the boys claiming a 41-37 win.

Punxsy's wrestlers will be at the Bellefonte Tournament on Saturday in the only weekend action for the Chucks.

Josephine Patricia Duffell, 94

Josephine Patricia Duffell, known as "Pat," "Grammy" or "Gramma" to those who loved her, went to heaven on Jan. 12, 2015, in Punxsutawney.

She was born in Chicago on July 30, 1920, a daughter of the late Louis and Jeannie Capra.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Duffell. They were married in Chicago in 1946.

They moved to the St. Petersburg, Florida area in 1970 until Pat moved to Punxsutawney in 2013 to be with her family.

Helen Behrendt, 96

Helen Behrendt, 96, of Punxsutawney, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2015, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

She was born Sept. 23, 1918, in Valier, a daughter of the late Eva (Wagner) and Peter Zelonis.

On May 16, 1935, she married Earl E. “Pinky” Behrendt, who preceded her in death.

Helen enjoyed spending time with her family, reading, gardening, cooking, baking, crossword puzzles and Sunday dinners.

Animal rights advocate addresses concerns to council

PUNXSUTAWNEY — An animal rights activist asked Punxsutawney Borough Council for help with her passion regarding animal rights and the humane tethering of dogs.

Lynn Porada, a Punxsy resident and animal advocate, said that she came to council on behalf of the animals.

"As everybody knows, winter weather has already hit our area," Porada said. "There are many dogs that are tied up outside, and there are cats who are outside with no shelter."

Chucks fall to Bulldogs, fare better than expected

Blake Bizousky was one of five Punxsy wrestlers to pick up a victory in Thursday night's bout against Redbank Valley. On the scoreboard, the Chucks lost 51-27, but in matches actually wrestled, the tally was much closer, 33-27.
