1963 undefeated Chucks set to be honored at tonight's home opener

September 5, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — I would say to close your eyes for a second and imagine someone that you've always looked up to being in your presence, watching you work. But if I did that, you wouldn't be able to read The Spirit.

So let's imagine with our eyes open and our attention still on the article, shall we?

Now that you have the person or group in your head, can you imagine the butterflies that would be running through you as they watch you do what they did?

Personally, if Rick Reilly was here at 510 Pine St. and pulled up a chair beside me, I would get carpal tunnel immediately.

Girls' volleyball wins first home match

September 3, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Fresh off its opening tournament, the Lady Chucks of Punxsutawney Area High School opened up their regular season at home against Ridgway on Tuesday evening.

The Lady Chucks played a tough Knoch opponent Saturday, but like one of their warmup songs said, it was "On to the next one."
Unfortunately for Ridgway, they were the next ones.

Punxsy took the match in three straight games (25-18, 25-21, 25-8) to start the regular season 1-0.

Vroman Empire: Vroman leads Raiders to 25-22 Route 36 win

August 31, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After months of anticipation and weeks of preparation, it was finally time for some Friday night lights in Jefferson County. To make it more special for the fans of the Punxsutawney Chucks and Brookville Raiders, the much-anticipated Route 36 battle returned Friday night at Brookville High School.

Punxsy came into the game Friday night as the favorite and reigning winner of the classic battle. After losing three of the last four match
ups with the Chucks, the Raiders came in hungry to get back on top of the rivalry they've controlled in recent memory.

Route 36 rivalry resumes tonight

August 29, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Rivalries. They're one of the best, most intense happenings in the sports' world.

On any level of play, in any sport, you see these rivalries take place each year.

Michigan vs. Ohio State and Auburn vs. Alabama exemplify rivalries in major collegiate athletics. The same can be said on the hardwood with the battles that the North Carolina Tar Heels and Duke Blue Devils have
endured over the years.

The Detroit Red Wings and Colorado Avalance still have a hatred rivalry, dating back to the mid-90s and the epic playoff battles that ensued.

Chucks lose by one stroke, suffer first loss of season

August 26, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — If you've ever listened to a coaches' press conference at any competitive level, you'll hear them say that they are focused on the task at hand and that each game counts the same.

A loss early in the season counts the same as a loss late in the season.

For golf, the same can be said about strokes.

In Punxsutawney's biggest match of the young season, the team found this out the hard way.

In the Route 36 battle, the Chucks dropped a highly competitive match to the Raiders of Brookville, 164-165.

Ouch.

One stroke made the difference.

Seniors lead way for boys' soccer this year

August 22, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Senior night will be special this year for the Punxsutawney Area High School boys' soccer team. Each one is special in its own way — if you were involved in an organization in high school, you understand.

But this year's team is driven by the 12th-graders.

They're the seniors who have led the program to a 15-4-1 record, a district title and a 15-5 record in three consecutive years.

You can use the Tomlinism "The standard is the standard" and "The next man is up" if you want, but the senior Chucks will be misssed both on and off the field.

Lady Chucks enter season with high expectations

August 15, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Walking down the halls of Punxsutawney Area High School, you can hear the squeaking of shoes coming from the hardwood floor in the distance. The distinct noise, added to the sound "Let's go girls," can only mean one thing.

Volleyball season is here.

The encouraging words of second-year Head Coach Heather Good shows that the Lady Chucks mean business once again.
After the season the Lady Chucks had last year, expectations are very high.

After defeating Bradford Area High School in the District IX title game, Punxsy went on to lose in the first round of the playoffs.

Lady Chucks look for bounce-back season

August 14, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — To say the Punxsutawney Area High School girls' soccer team wants to have a better year is an understatement.

New Head Coach Bridget Rheaume is looking to lead her young Lady Chucks team to a better record, but honing the skills is the most important part of that.

"I want to improve their skills," Rheaume said. "Hopefully, we can end up having more wins because of that."

Through three days of practice, Rheaume said that Emily and Anna Horner, Claire Smith and Courtney Huffman are among the many players that caught her eye early on.

An old-fashioned quarterback battle

August 13, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Regardless of what level, one of the best parts of any training camp is to keep an eye on position battles. For the Pittsburgh Steelers, you have the battle between Le'Veon Bell, Jonathan Dwyer and Isaac Redman for the starting running back position. If you look at the local programs, both Penn State University and the University of Pittsburgh have a quarterback competition. High school is no different, as the Chucks have a quarterback battle of their own going on.

Football's back in Punxsutawney

August 12, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After a long summer off, the fall sports programs are getting back into the swing of things, as the 2013-2014 school year is just around the corner. After a three-day conditioning period, as brought into effect by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association, the Punxsutawney Chucks hit the field Monday for their first official practice of the season.

Head Coach Alan Nichol, said that the new rules of conditioning changed the approach he took to the first day of practice. Because of the time last week, the Chucks were able to get right into things Monday.
