Unique honor: Neal, a libero, named MVP

November 18, 2010

PUNXSUTAWNEY — When it comes to volleyball, the hitters get all the glory.

Their devastating kills leave the crowd in awe and the opposition in pain.

That's what makes Hannah Neal's recognition as the 2010 District IX Class AA/AAA Volleyball Player of the Year all the more amazing, considering she started out of the libero position in every match but one this season.

Snyder, Crago, Bowers recognized as All-Stars

November 18, 2010

PUNXSUTAWNEY — For the first time ever, the Punxsy volleyball team will have four District IX Class AA/AAA All-Stars, as joining Player of the Year Hannah Neal are fellow upperclassmen Corri Snyder, Shawnna Crago and Tawnee Bowers.

Neal, a senior libero, received the most votes from district coaches and was named the Player of the Year. Snyder made her way on the All-Star list for the third time, as she was recognized as an honorable mention in 2008 and 2009.

This is the second-straight season that Crago has become an All-Star, while Bowers made the list for the first time.

Shiock named lone Punxsy girls' soccer All-Star

November 17, 2010

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsy senior Timi Shiock — a goalkeeper for the Lady Chucks for more than three years — has ended her career by being recognized as an Upper Allegheny Valley Soccer League Girls' Central Division All-Star for the second-straight year.

Shiock was the only member of the Lady Chucks to be named an All-Star this season, as both she and Sierra Milton were 2009 All-Stars. She helped Punxsy accomplish a 6-12 season in 2010.

During those six 2010 victories, Shiock allowed just five goals. In addition, Punxsy gave up a school-record low of 47 goals this season.

Lady Chucks struggle at season-ending state tournament

November 15, 2010

PITTSBURGH — Saturday at North Hills High School, the Punxsy volleyball team didn't look anything like the group that won every match but two and easily swept its way to a district championship this season.

Unfortunately for the Lady Chucks, their worst performance came at the start of the PIAA Class AA playoffs, and after compiling a 1-8 record through nine sets of action Saturday, their season came to a close.

Defense helps Raiders advance to district title game

November 15, 2010

CLARION — A dominating defense made the difference Saturday night, as the Brookville Raiders suffocated Moniteau in the second half during a 14-7 win over the Warriors at Clarion University's Memorial Stadium in the District IX Class AA Semifinal.

The win erased a three-game playoff losing streak to the Warriors for Brookville, but most importantly, put the Raiders in the district championship game Friday against the 10-0 Brockway Rovers at Clarion University.
