Turnovers cost Chucks district title

November 13, 2010

DUBOIS — During the Punxsy football team's perfect regular season, the Chucks very rarely turned the ball over.

Four Punxsy turnovers tipped what was a close game through three-plus quarters in Clearfield's favor, as the Bisons exited E.J. Mansell Stadium in DuBois with the 2010 District IX Class AAA Championship after a 26-14 victory over the Chucks.

Raiders hope history doesn’t repeat itself

CLARION — The last time the Raiders played in postseason football action, they were run off the field following a 55-7 blowout at the hands of Moniteau.

Brookville is sure hoping that two years can make a world of difference.

The Raiders and the Warriors will square off in the semifinal round of the District IX Class AA playoffs at Clarion University's Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m. tonight with a spot in the championship game against Brockway on the line.

Undefeated Chucks aspire to defend district title against unbeaten Clearfield

November 12, 2010

DUBOIS — A year after surprising District IX with a Class AAA Championship Game win over Clearfield last season, the Chucks have an opportunity at defending their title for the first time ever at 7 p.m. at E.J. Mansell Stadium in DuBois.

The Chucks are in search of their third district title, as after winning their first crown in 1991 — a Quad-A championship over DuBois — Punxsy didn't return to the title game in 1992. Instead, DuBois beat Clearfield.

Lady Chucks feel confident entering states

November 11, 2010

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Coming off their sixth-straight District IX Class AA Championship, the Punxsy volleyball team feels as good as ever about its chances of advancing past the first stage of the PIAA playoffs this weekend.

In years past, Punxsy would run into a talented WPIAL foe that, for the most part, overpowered the Lady Chucks in a best-of-five match. This season, Punxsy will test its mettle against three teams in a round-robin tournament that begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at the North Hills Junior High School Annex.

Presloid chosen as UAVSL MVP

November 10, 2010

PUNXSUTAWNEY — When Punxsy junior Tyler Presloid received the news that he was named the Upper Allegheny Valley Soccer League Boys' Central Division Most Valuable Player, he was quite surprised.

"This is a huge honor because there are a lot of good players in the league," Presloid said. "To be named MVP, I'm just speechless."

Those around the league can't be the least bit shocked about the honor, as the junior set the PAHS single-season school record with 25 goals and led the Chucks to a 15-4-1 record and their first-ever District IX Class AA Championship Game berth.

Young, Triponey also honored as All-Stars

November 10, 2010

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Most Valuable Player Tyler Presloid wasn't the only member of the Chucks to be selected as an Upper Allegheny Valley Soccer League Boys' Central Division All-Star.

After the Chucks broke the school record for wins in a season and claimed their first-ever postseason victory, Presloid was joined by senior Kody Young and junior Daniel Triponey as Punxsy players recognized by the league.

Strong season comes to close for Raiders

November 10, 2010

SOMERSET — After losing by a goal in the District IX Class A Championship Game last Thursday to Northern Potter, the Brookville Raiders had a new attitude when it came to the PIAA state playoffs: Have fun.

The Raiders entered the first round of the state tournament Tuesday in Somerset with a laid back feel, and the notion that playing a loose game with zero pressure would be the best approach. That mindset nearly paid off, as the Raiders kept pace with North Star before surrendering a second-half goal, ending Brookville's season with a 1-0 loss to the Cougars.

November 9, 2010

HERSHEY — Four members of the Punxsy girls' cross country team competed in Saturday's 2010 PIAA Class AAA Championships, and while not performing poorly by any means, head coach George Wehrle said that the results were somewhat less than expected.

Meterko, Baker successful at state meet

November 9, 2010

HERSHEY — Up against the best runners in the state in the big school division, Punxsy senior A.J. Meterko and junior Dane Baker came away feeling pretty good about their performances Saturday in Hershey at the PIAA Class AAA Boys' Cross Country Championships.

Meterko, a senior who was competing in his third state meet, finished in 114th place with a time of 17:26 out of 283 runners. Baker, running at states for the second time, followed in 210th place in 18:09.
