PUNXSUTAWNEY — Redbank Valley's ability to earn major decisions and falls during five of its six victories on the mat helped it down the Punxsy wrestling team Wednesday night, 35-29.
With each team receiving a forfeit, both squads split the remaining 12 bouts, 6-6. During those six victories, Punxsy (6-8) earned three decisions, two major decisions and a fall. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs registered three wins by fall and three by major decision, leading to the six-point difference in their victory.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Double digit scoring performances by John Matthews and Braxton Giavedoni carried the Punxsy seventh-grade boys' basketball team toward a 43-31 triumph over St. Marys Tuesday in Punxsutawney.
Punxsy (6-2) outscored St. Marys 10-9 during the first and second quarters and 11-9 during the final frame, making the Chucks' 14-6 second quarter the separating factor between a tight victory and a double-digit win.
Matthews scored a team-best 16 points, and Giavedoni wasn't too far behind, tallying 12 points.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Being competitive hasn't been enough for the Punxsy boys' basketball team, as even though it kept things close with District IX League-leading St. Marys Tuesday night, the Chucks suffered their 17th-straight league loss, 52-45.
Punxsy (4-7, 0-4 District IX League) trailed by just two points with 1:28 left before St. Marys (10-3, 4-1) inbounded the ball to Jimmy Werner, who quickly finished under the basket. Werner's hoop started the Flying Dutchmen's game-winning 5-0 run that finished off the Chucks.
BROOKVILLE — With the dual meet victory already secured, it would have been easy for the Raiders' Logan Stout to continue to take his lumps as DuBois 215-pounder Landon Hannah continued to earn points seemingly at will.
Someone forgot to tell Stout that the match was over.
Trailing 9-2 in the third period, Stout pulled off an improbable maneuver to gain control of the match before pinning Hannah in a stunner, highlighting an all-around impressive night of wrestling for Brookville, as the Raiders earned a 52-21 win over DuBois in front of the home crowd.
SENECA — A year after finishing second-best, the Punxsy junior-high wrestling team won the Cranberry Team Duals Saturday.
Punxsy was dominant all day, beating Oil City (76-18), Franklin (62-19), Greenville (55-37) and Warren (69-24) while completing the tournament with a 4-0 record.
Bonus points were the key to Punxsy's victory Saturday, as it won 22 bouts by fall.
ST. MARYS — St. Marys senior guard Kayla Hoohuli once again proved why she could go down as one of the best female basketball players in District IX history Monday night, scoring 46 points during the Lady Dutch's 57-48 victory over Punxsutawney.
Punxsy threw everything it had at Hoohuli, but she still scored all but 11 of her team's points while helping St. Marys dispatch a 14-5 deficit. Hoohuli was strongest down the stretch, going 8-of-10 from the free-throw line while providing her team with a 17-13 final quarter to extend upon a 40-35 lead after three.
BROOKVILLE — It was a tale of two halves Monday in Brookville, as the Lady Raiders bounced back from a slow first half to pull away from Redbank Valley late, turning a close game into a 63-31 rout of the Lady Bulldogs.
When Brookville went into halftime with a seven-point lead, it was hard to imagine that the Lady Raiders were going to find a way to just cruise to the one-sided victory. Brookville constantly turned the ball over in the first half and couldn't seem to find a consistent offensive attack.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy ninth-grade girls' basketball team bounced back from its only losing streak to date by thrashing Indiana Monday, 39-14.
The Lady Chucks (8-3) dropped two-straight games to Altoona and Hollidaysburg last week, but Monday, they didn't give up more than four points during any quarter while cruising to a huge win.
Punxsy scored 10 points during each of the first two quarters while taking a 20-7 advantage into the break. After jumping ahead 33-11 entering the final frame, Punxsy allowed just a three-pointer during the fourth quarter.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy boys' basketball team played as a team and won as a team Saturday afternoon against Karns City, as every player contributed to the 63-61 victory that snapped the Chucks' four-game losing streak.
Punxsy trailed 47-41 entering the fourth quarter and was down 57-52 with 3:15 left before scoring 11 of the game's final 15 points to eek out a win over the Gremlins.
After a loose ball foul on the Chucks (4-6) put Karns City's Jake Henry on the free-throw line with 20.4 seconds left, the senior nailed both foul shots to tie the game at 61.
