HOLLIDAYSBURG — Upon winning four of the first five bouts Tuesday against Hollidaysburg to build a 22-3 advantage, the Punxsy junior-high wrestling team surged toward a 57-23 victory on the road.
"We had another nice win tonight. The kids wrestled pretty well, and we saw a lot of nice things out there," Punxsy head coach Bill Burke said. "Intensity was good, and they got the job done even with a couple of starters — Matt Burke and Darin James — out of the lineup due to illness."
Led by senior defensive lineman Ben Blazavich, five Punxsy football players were recently named Pennsylvania Football News All-State players, with each classification getting four teams on both offense and defense for a total of 32 all-state teams.
Also included on the team as Honorable Mention were senior linebacker Ian Weaver, senior defensive back Duell Thompson, senior defensive lineman Devon Luzell and junior quarterback Logan Weaver.
HOLLIDAYSBURG — After falling behind 16-15 midway through its match at Hollidaysburg, the Punxsy wrestling team never lost another bout while defeating the Golden Tigers Tuesday night, 54-16.
Punxsy (5-6) was down 16-15 after a loss by fall, two defeats by decision and a loss by major decision from 152 pounds to 103 pounds. That's when Punxsy won the final seven bouts thanks to four falls, two forfeits and a decision to exit with the victory.
BROOKVILLE — Tuesday night's Brookville boys' varsity game against St. Marys could be called a lot of things, but perhaps the most fitting would be to call it a reality check.
The Raiders played well in the first half and led by as many as 10 points before the Dutchmen stormed out of halftime to shut down the Raiders and take the lead. From there, St. Marys never looked back, picking up a 55-45 victory in Brookville, handing the Raiders their first loss of the season in the process.
DUBOIS — A strong performance from Shawnaa Crago in the post proved to be too powerful for DuBois Central Catholic Monday night as the Lady Chucks picked up a 45-37 road win over the Lady Cardinals in DuBois.
The plan was to get the ball low to Crago, and Punxsy executed all night long. The senior finished with 17 points to lead all scorers in a game that moved Punxsy's record to 3-6 on the year, with a trip to Brookville looming Thursday.
"The guards did a nice job getting her the ball in the low post," Punxsy head coach Randy Reitz said. "Shawnna did a very nice job of finishing."
WHEELING, W.Va. — The Punxsutawney varsity wrestling team had a strong showing last Tuesday and Wednesday at the Wheeling Park tournament as the Chucks took 10th place out of the 40-team field.
While the Chucks as a team looked strong up and down the board, the annual tournament was highlighted by the return of senior Kody Young, wrestling in his first action of the season.
Young, along with teammate Neko Cappella, finished the two-day tournament with a combined record of 8-0 to lead Punxsy, with Young's victories coming in record-breaking fashion.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Marion Center sophomore Brodey Thompson may not have been included on the Carl A. Truance Holiday Classic All-Tournament team, but his three-pointer at the buzzer lifted the Stingers past the Punxsy boys' basketball team Thursday night in front of a near-capacity crowd in Punxsutawney.
The Chucks (3-3) were ahead 49-48 with 9.3 seconds left before Daniel Triponey missed the front end of a one-and-one. As Marion Center's sharp shooting Alex Woodrow, the tournament MVP, raced down court, he was met by one of Punxsy's tallest players — Luke Janocha.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — A day after scoring eight second-half points, the Punxsy girls' basketball team scored just 10 during the final two quarters Thursday to drop both games of the Carl A. Truance Holiday Classic in Punxsutawney.
The Lady Chucks (2-6) trailed 28-20 after three quarters, but Hazleton was able to pull away with a 15-5 final quarter to earn a 43-25 victory in the tournament's consolation game.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy junior tandem of Daniel Triponey and Logan Weaver combined for 40 points during the Chucks' 61-48 triumph over Clarion during the first day of the 16th-annual Carl A. Truance Holiday Classic Wednesday night in Punxsutawney.
Triponey led with a game-high 23 points, and Weaver followed with 17 points, as the Chucks returned to the tournament's championship game after missing out last year.
Punxsy will face Marion Center at 7:45 p.m. tonight with the title on the line. Marion Center is coming off a 61-42 victory over Redbank Valley earlier Wednesday.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy girls' basketball team was unable to crack 30 points before missing out on the Carl A. Truance Holiday Classic Championship Game for the third-straight season during a 41-29 loss to Westmont Hilltop Wednesday night in Punxsutawney.
Punxsy senior Shawnna Crago scored 18 points, but she didn't receive much help, as the rest of the Lady Chucks' roster combined for 11 points.
Junior Alex Magill added seven points, and Parris Kernich tallied two.
