PUNXSUTAWNEY — Senior Shawnna Crago needed just one game to step out as one of the Punxsy softball team's leaders Monday.
Crago, Punxsy's starting pitcher and one of the squad's four captains, hit a three-run home run and struck out seven over three perfect innings to lead the Lady Chucks to a 12-0 victory in five innings over Bradford.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — It wasn't pretty, but first-year manager Mike Dickey will take the Punxsy baseball team's 5-3 victory over Bradford in the season-opener Monday at Rich Kuntz Memorial Field in Punxsutawney.
"We don't give back wins," Dickey said. "There are no style points."
The Chucks led 4-0 through three innings before Punxsy's miscues on the base paths and errors in the field allowed the Owls to make things interesting.
Bradford had the tying run on first base during the final inning, but Punxsy relief pitcher Dane Baker induced a fly out to left field that ended the Owls' threat.
DUBOIS — Punxsy boys' tennis coach Todd Heigley feels that his team was only a few unforced errors away from beating DuBois Central Catholic in their opener Monday afternoon.
The Chucks lost late leads and a match in a tiebreaker, which may have given them a chance at victory.
But Punxsy (0-1) couldn't pick up enough wins and fell 6-3 at DuBois Central Catholic (1-0).
WILKES-BARRE — Two of Punxsutawney's three wrestlers are still competing after Day One of the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling State Championship Tournament at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre.
Kaleb Young, a state runner-up the past two years, has once again advanced to the championship semifinals after a 2-0 day Friday.
Troy Peace won his first two bouts before a loss dropped him to the consolation bracket, while Josh Schuckers lost both of his matches Friday and has been eliminated.
All three of Punxsy's wrestlers are competing in the 13- and 14-year-old age division.
The Play of the Week will be put on hold until next Saturday due to the lack of Punxsutawney varsity events.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsy cross country and track and field coach George Wehrle doesn't envision seniors Milea Schall or Shannon Byerly using treadmills to stay in shape.
Both girls enjoy running outside way too much.
After successful Punxsutawney Area High School cross country and track careers, both Schall and Byerly will be taking their enjoyment of competitive running to the next level next fall.
CLARION — Led by a two-time state runner-up, a trio of Punxsy wrestlers will compete in the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling State Championship Tournament this weekend at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre.
Kaleb Young, a runner-up at the PJW state tournament the past two years, will once again compete at states, which take place Friday and Saturday.
For the second-straight year, Young will be joined by Josh Schuckers and Troy Peace after all three finished within the top two places of their weight classes and age divisions at the Area V Tournament last Saturday at Clarion University.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — For the first time in more than a half-decade, two Punxsy underclassmen were named to the District IX Boys' Basketball League All-Star team.
Junior guards Logan Weaver and Daniel Triponey received the honor Monday, becoming the first non-senior tandem at PAHS to accomplish the feat since the 2004-2005 season. Along with senior Adam Vassallo, junior Dennis Manges and sophomore Devin Mesoraco were recognized as All-Stars six years ago.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — A week after being selected to play in the 12th-annual Alice R. Kozel Foundation District IX Basketball All-Star games, seniors Shawnna Crago and Jenna Reitz were added to another All-Star list Monday night.
For the second-straight year, both Crago and Reitz were listed on the District IX Girls' Basketball League All-Star team.
Crago is one of the 10 girls' All-Stars, while Reitz was recognized as the girls' lone honorable mention.
