Spack wins first bout; Young survives in consolation round

March 10, 2011

HERSHEY — Both of the Punxsy wrestling team's state-qualifiers are one victory away from a medal after each won a bout at the PIAA Class AAA Individual Wrestling Tournament Thursday at the Giant Center in Hershey.

Spack (31-6), a junior, won his only bout of the day and will compete next in today's championship quarterfinals, and Young (32-3), a senior, went 1-1 Thursday and will next compete in the consolation second round.

Young, Spack bring prior experience to states

March 9, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Kody Young and Seth Spack enter today's PIAA Class AAA Individual Wrestling Tournament with something that not many past Punxsy grapplers can lay claim to: Experience at states.

Both wrestlers have competed at the Giant Center in Hershey before. Spack was there last year as a Northwest Region runner-up. He was eliminated after two bouts.

Young, a senior, entered states as a sophomore as the region's No. 3 seed. After losing his first bout, he won to advance to the second day, only to be eliminated in his third match — one victory away from a medal.

Punxsy's Weaver, Luzell sign on to play football at Division II Mercyhurst

March 7, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Longtime teammates and Punxsy seniors Devon Luzell and Ian Weaver will be playing football together for at least four more years, and that college connection isn't much more than coincidental.

Luzell and Weaver fell in love with Division II Mercyhurst College in Erie, and that led to both of them becoming part of the Lakers' 2011 recruiting class in February.

"It was just a coincidence that we both liked it up there," Luzell said. "It's nice having Ian come up there with me, but I would have gone up there regardless. They were really the best opportunity."

Young sprints into Hershey with regional title

ALTOONA — Not often does running factor into a wrestling match, but Punxsy senior Kody Young showed off his sprinting ability for a brief moment Saturday at the Northwest Region Class AAA Individual Wrestling Tournament.

With a spot in the 125-pound final and a berth in the PIAA tournament on the line, Young escaped the grasp of General McLane junior Tim Wheeling with fewer than five seconds left in the ultimate tiebreaker to earn a 4-3 victory. The win clinched Young's second trip to states and provided him with his school-record fourth regional medal.

Power, not just technique, helps Spack win region

March 6, 2011

ALTOONA — When Punxsy junior Seth Spack fell shy of a second-straight District IX Class AAA Individual Wrestling Championship Feb. 26 in Clarion, his family was disheartened.

But Spack quickly quelled their upset feelings, knowing that Saturday's Northwest Region Class AAA Tournament was yet to be decided and the district tournament wouldn't affect his ability to reach states.

"The whole last week, my family was down. But I don't get mad when I lose, because everybody loses," the ever-positive Spack said. "I told them, 'Don't worry, I'm winning regionals.'"

Shields becomes Raiders' only state qualifier

SHARON — Following one of the best weekends in the history of Brookville wrestling, expectations were high for the Northwest Region Class AA Individual Tournament Saturday in Sharon.

But the Raiders had some bad luck and took some tough losses and sent only one of their nine wrestlers in the tournament to states next weekend in Hershey.

Four Chucks advance to semifinals

LTOONA — The Punxsy wrestling team's Big Three has a new addition.

The Chucks' best three wrestlers — senior Kody Young and juniors Seth Spack and Neko Cappella — were each expected to have a successful first day at the Northwest Region Class AAA Individual Wrestling Tournament Friday night in Altoona. Now, there's a fourth member to add to that trio.

Raiders win second-straight district crown

CLARION — When Brookville's Zane Hackett attacked the rim during the District IX Class AA title game at Clarion University, he was cheered on by students chanting "Bonesaw!" and holding fake cardboard saws.

Hackett used his six-foot, six-inch frame to challenge Moniteau physically inside, scoring 20 points to help Brookville (22-2) win its second consecutive district championship, 58-49.

"It felt great. Everything was going in. We came out and started with a lot of intensity," Hackett said. "They played hard the whole game, and we were able to match what they were doing."
