PUNXSUTAWNEY — For the third time in four years, the Punxsy boys' tennis team will compete in the District IX Class AAA Team Tournament Championship.
Behind a No. 1 singles win by senior Dave Roberts and victories in both doubles matches, the Chucks defeated Bradford in the semifinals Wednesday in Punxsutawney, 3-2.
Just a year ago, Punxsy was playing without a senior and lost to Bradford, 4-1, in the team semifinals. This season, behind one of its deepest and most experienced squads under head coach Todd Heigley, the Chucks are in search of that elusive team championship.
BROOKVILLE — Neither the players nor coaches for the Brookville and St. Marys softball teams were happy after the Lady Dutch beat the Lady Raiders 14-0 Wednesday in Brookville.
Tempers flared after St. Marys scored seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to extend its lead to 14-0.
Brookville coach Earl Ross objected to St. Marys coach Manny Gerarge continuing to run the bases aggressively, despite leading by double digits.
ALTOONA — The Punxsy boys' track and field team was strong in every event but the sprints to beat Bellefonte, 98-52, but Altoona's speed was too much for the Chucks during Altoona's 118-32 win during a tri-meet Tuesday in Altoona.
The Chucks (4-3) won every event but the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes, the 110-meter high hurdles and the 4x400-meter relay while dispatching Bellefonte. Against the Mountain Lions, Punxsy won just two events — the 800-meter dash and the javelin.
ALTOONA — The Punxsy girls' track and field team was strong in the field during a 105-41 victory over Bellefonte, but the Lady Chucks couldn't keep up with Altoona during a 116-34 loss during a tri-meet Tuesday in Altoona.
Punxsy (3-4) won 14 events against Bellefonte, including sweeps in the discus, triple jump, 400-meter dash and 3,200-meter run.
Against Altoona, the Lady Chucks won five events, led by a pair of first-place distances by Nickita Martz. Martz had the best throws of all three schools in both the shot put (32-5 1/2) and javelin (106-8).
PUNXSUTAWNEY — An inning after it allowed eight runs and lost to District IX Class AAA rival St. Marys 14-3 in five innings, the Punxsy baseball team had another game to play Monday night at Rich Kuntz Memorial Field.
Instead of feeling sorry for themselves and letting a loss affect them, the Chucks responded with a five-run first inning during Game 2 and defeated the Dutch 12-3 to split the season series.
ST. MARYS — The Punxsy softball team played one of its most complete games all year during a 6-0 victory over St. Marys Monday night on the road.
The Lady Chucks (7-0) recorded 10 hits, including three triples, and junior Randa Depp provided her finest varsity performance ever to lead Punxsy to a series sweep over its District IX Class AAA rival.
Punxsy was led by Ashley Barenchik, Taylor Powell and Jenna Reitz, who each tallied two hits. Barenchik scored twice and tripled, Powell drove two runners home with a triple and Tia Davis also tripled.
1. The people who maintain Rich Kuntz Memorial Field and the fields at the Frank Fairman Complex deserve a ton of credit for what they do on a day-to-day basis. Throughout April, as rain came down nearly every day, those fields were almost always ready for baseball and softball. Their dedication and time they put into maintaining those fields shouldn’t be overlooked.
PUNXSUTAWNEY— Punxsutawney's junior varsity softball team used its powerful offensive attack to beat Curwensville 16-1 in four innings last Friday.
Seven Lady Chucks combined for 11 hits, and three batters had multiple hits.
Sarah London (three), Madison Neal (two) and Sydney Phillips (two) had more than one hit.
Savanna Hallman, Stephanie Smith, Sydney Weaver and Lauren Wolfe also had hits.
Two of London's three hits were doubles.
Punxsy coach Ken Covatch was pleased with Phillips effort.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Once she settled in, Curwensville wasn't going to stop Punxsy senior Shawnna Crago Friday afternoon at Harry Noerr Field in Punxsutawney.
Crago allowed a run on two hits and two walks during the first inning before she controlled the Lady Golden Tide during the final six innings of the Punxsy softball team's 7-1 victory.
Crago also produced offensively for the Lady Chucks (6-0). She hit a two-run home run during Punxsy's three-run fifth inning that extended the team's lead to 6-1.
Punxsutawney native Devin Mesoraco returned to form and bumped his 2011 average back above .300 after he hit .421 this week.
Mesoraco, a 2007 first-round draft pick of the Cincinnati Reds, batted 8-for-19 during six games with the Class AAA Louisville Bats this week. He improved his average from .256 to .306 following the successful week.
Saturday, he started the week with a 1-for-3 game that included a double and two strikeouts. He followed that game up with his first of three multi-hit performances this week.
