After strong spring, Mesoraco to begin at Triple-A with major league call-up in mind

March 31, 2011

GOODYEAR, Ariz. — When Punxsy native Devin Mesoraco hit an eighth-inning home run during the first week of spring training with the Cincinnati Reds March 2, manager Dusty Baker said that the slugger hit the ball a mile, a mile-and-a-half.

The home run broke a 6-6 tie and gave the Reds a 7-6 win over the Chicago White Sox.

The lengthy blast was the first of many impressive spring training cuts from Mesoraco, who is primed to make the jump to the majors for the first time this season.

The wrestler finished as a state runner-up the past two years.

March 30, 2011

CLARION — When the infielders for Brookville and Clarion's softball teams raced toward ground balls Wednesday afternoon at Clarion, they were forced to contend with Mother Nature, as well as their opponents.

The snow started about an hour before the game and continued throughout, leaving both teams scrambling to stay warm and trying to find solid footing in the field.

The Lady Bobcats (3-0) overcame the conditions and used a strong outing from starting pitcher from Krysta Fuller to beat the Lady Raiders, 12-0.

"It was a quality win over a quality opponent," Young said. "Spreading those third-place finishes around really helped."

Chucks hold on to defeat Owls in home opener, 5-3

March 28, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — It wasn't pretty, but first-year manager Mike Dickey will take the Punxsy baseball team's 5-3 victory over Bradford in the season-opener Monday at Rich Kuntz Memorial Field in Punxsutawney.

"We don't give back wins," Dickey said. "There are no style points."

The Chucks led 4-0 through three innings before Punxsy's miscues on the base paths and errors in the field allowed the Owls to make things interesting.

The Chucks lost late leads and a match in a tiebreaker, which may have given them a chance at victory.

But Punxsy (0-1) couldn't pick up enough wins and fell 6-3 at DuBois Central Catholic (1-0).
