PUNXSUTAWNEY– Punxsy baseball coach Mike Dickey said anyone who comes to watch the Chucks play this season needs to keep one thing in mind about his team.
Punxsy isn't a team where any opponent can feel safe with its lead.
After failing behind 8-0 in the second inning, the Chucks (8-7) scored 21 runs over the next five innings to earn a five-inning, 21-11 mercy rule decision over Hollidaysburg Monday.
PUNXSUTAWNEY— Three swings of the bat by Punxsy's softball team was provided nine of the Lady Chucks' softball teams 11 runs in a six-inning, mercy rule decision over District VI Hollidaysburg Monday in Punxsy.
Shawnna Crago and Ashley Barenchik both crushed grand slams with Crago's home run ending the game in the sixth. Taylor Powell also hit a home run to give Punxsy a 1-0 lead in the first.
1. It was disappointing to watch the closing moments of the Punxsy-DuBois boys’ tennis district team championship match last Wednesday. I’m not saying this is the reason DuBois won and Punxsy lost, but for a district title, the players on the court shouldn’t be deciding if balls are in or out of bounds. A lot of credit goes to Punxsy, and Dave Roberts in particular, for taking the rulings as they were, not complaining and playing through it all.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsy's junior varsity softball used a strong pitching performance from Monica Cameron to beat Ligonier Valley 8-2 in a rain shortened, five-inning affair.
Cameron pitched all five innings, striking out two and allowing six hits.
The Lady Chucks (17-1) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed.
Cameron doubled for one of Punxsy's two extra base hits. Sydney Phillips also tripled. Punxsy scored its eight runs on six hits.
DUBOIS— Mitch Blose and Tim Pearce will try to become the first Punxsy tennis doubles' team to win a District IX Class AAA championship in two years Wednesday in DuBois.
The last Punxsy doubles team to win the crown was Jordan Walker and Jesse Branken.
Blose and Pearce were 8-0 together in the regular season and will open the tournament at 9:30 a.m. as the No. 1 overall seed. The duo will face Corey Maines and Jordan McAllister of Clearfield in the first round.Chucks' coach Todd Heigley has high hopes for Blose and Pearce.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — A home run by Ligonier Valley's Kristen Gabelt stood as the only run during her team's 1-0 victory over the Punxsy softball team during a rain-shortened five-inning game Friday at Harry Noerr Field in Punxsutawney.
Ligonier (18-1) scored seven times in the top of the sixth inning, but with two outs, two runners on base and a 2-2 count on Lizzie Newhouse during that inning, lightning paused the game.
Punxsutawney Area High School baseball standout Devin Mesoraco completed a successful week with a 4-for-5 game Friday with the Cincinnati Reds' Class AAA affiliate Louisville Bats.
Mesoraco improved his batting average to .295 on the season following a 7-for-23 (.304) week. During the week, he had three extra-base hits, including his first home run since the first week of the season.
Saturday, he was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two walks.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy boys' tennis team lost its final match of the season Thursday, 5-4 in DuBois, but the Chucks completed the year with a 6-5 record, which was an improvement over last year's 4-8 mark.
Punxsy went from a 4-8 team in 2010 that had no upperclassmen to a squad that finished above .500 in 2011.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Randa Depp pitched her third-straight shutout, Hannah Neal hit a two-run home run, and the Punxsy softball team avenged an earlier loss when it defeated State College Thursday afternoon at Harry Noerr Field, 5-0.
"We wanted to exact a little revenge (on State College)," Punxsy manager Alan Pifer said. "We were flat over there when we played them. We were pumped up today."
