Lady Chucks beat Hollidaysburg, lose to Bradford on Senior Night

May 10, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy girls' track and field team could not surmount District IX Class AAA rival Bradford, but did earn a victory over District VI Hollidaysburg during Senior Recognition Day Tuesday in Punxsutawney.

The Lady Chucks (4-5) lost to the Lady Owls, 93-57, but dominated the Lady Golden Tigers, 105 1/2-44 1/2, thanks to a great day in the field.

Knowing how talented Bradford is, Punxsy head coach Barry Young was happy with his girls and pleased with what a nice day Tuesday was after a season of rainy and cold weather.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Tuesday was a bittersweet Senior Recognition Day for the Punxsy boys' track and field team, as the Chucks defeated District VI Hollidaysburg and lost to District IX Class AAA rival Bradford to conclude the regular season.

Punxsy (5-4) handled the Golden Tigers, 95-55, and was defeated by the Owls, 105-45.

Fifth-inning surge helps Williamsport win

May 10, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Once Williamsport figured out Punxsy starting pitcher Shawnna Crago Tuesday afternoon, the Lady Chucks' softball team couldn't contain the Lady Millionares' offense.

District VI Williamsport (12-4) used a five-run, seven-hit fifth inning to rally past Punxsy (8-3) and won 9-4 on the Lady Chucks' Senior Recognition Day.

Punxsy manager Alan Pifer said the fifth inning was the turning point.

May 9, 2011

STATE COLLEGE — State College scored five runs in the first inning, and the Punxsy baseball team's record dropped to 6-6 following a 10-4 defeat Monday in State College.

The Chucks — who scored eight runs in their final at-bat to beat the Little Lions, 12-11, April 7 in Punxsutawney — were unable to rally for the victory Monday. They cut the lead to 5-2 and 7-4 Monday, but never crept any closer.

Punxsy's Roberts, Murdock unable to win singles title

May 9, 2011

DUBOIS — Punxsutawney was denied an individual title for the fourth consecutive year, as seniors Dave Roberts and Adam Murdock fell short in the District IX Class AAA Boys' Tennis Singles Tournament Monday in DuBois.

Both Roberts and Murdock were eliminated by a DuBois player, as the Beavers' duo of Palmer Casteel and Trey Gilmore advanced to the final. Casteel, DuBois' No. 2 player, ultimately won the championship by the scores of 2-6, 6-0, 6-4.

The Walk Talk Ten

May 9, 2011

1. How come there aren't more fans at the Punxsy baseball and softball games? I know April was uncharacteristically wet, but for a free game, much more than a couple dozen people should be in attendance every night. The Chucks have won seven-straight district titles, and the Lady Chucks are in search of their fourth straight. Combined, the two teams have lost just once at home and play on the nicest fields in the district. Come on people, show some support.

Punxsy's Monoskey has thrown at a record-setting pace at PSU-Behrend

May 8, 2011

ERIE — When Punxsutawney native Katie Monoskey arrived at Penn State-Behrend three years ago, the Lions' track and field team didn't have a hammer thrower.

Head coach Greg Cooper, who recruited Monoskey, approached her to see if she would be interested in competing in the event.

Monoskey had experience in the three high school throwing events — discus, shot put and javelin — and wasn't against trying new things. She also wanted to focus on something more than the discus, which was her favorite event at the time.

Lady Chucks drop tough decision at DuBois, 5-4

May 8, 2011

DUBOIS— Punxsy softball had a two run lead and was three outs away from beating DuBois Saturday, but couldn't hold on and fell 5-4.

Shawnna Crago pitched for the Lady Chucks, struck out five batters and walked four over 6 1/3 innings pitched.

Two of Crago's walks were intentional.

Hannah Neal and Taylor Powell both drove in runs for Punxsy.

The Lady Chucks (8-2) led throughout and had a strong showing at the plate.

In the first inning, Punxsy took a 2-0 lead after Neal scored on a wild pitch and Powell drove in Ashley Barenchik on a sacrifice fly.

Depp dazzles in shutout of Clearfield, 7-0

May 6, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — For as well as junior Randa Depp pitched Friday against Clearfield, it doesn't appear as if the Punxsy softball team will be suffering through a losing streak anytime soon.

Depp pitched her second complete-game shutout against at District IX Class AAA opponent this week, and the Lady Chucks bounced back from their first defeat this season with a 7-0 victory over the Lady Bisons.

The junior followed up her last start — which was a three-hit shutout of St. Marys Monday — by recording a four-hitter Friday. She didn't walk a batter and struck out four.
