Thursday's edition of The Spirit officially announces the nominees for The Spirit's Spring Sports Outstanding Player Awards.

Seniors Jamie Bush and Ty Zimmerman (not pictured) both made their final appearance in a Chucks' uniform during Punxsy's 4-3, 10-inning loss to Upper Moreland in the PIAA AAA semifinals in Scotland, Pa., on Saturday.
From the plate, Bush tallied three hits and Zimmerman smacked a single and scored a run.

Punxsy's Taylor Phillips looks to throw in his first of two top of the second inning catches in right field in Monday's game against Hopewell in St. Marys. Phillips and the Chucks play the Golden Bears of Upper Moreland today at 3 p.m. in the PIAA AAA quarterfinals in Scotland, Pa.

Trailing 4-2 with one out and two opposing runners in scoring position in the bottom of the fifth, Punxsyâs baseball team made a defensive stand in the opening round of the PIAA State Playoffs when left fielder Dakotah Byers hit cut-off man John Matthews, who relayed the ball to catcher Garrett Zimmerman (pictured, left) to tag out Hopewellâs Shane Martin (right) and complete a double play. The Chucks rode the momentum to battle back and score three in the top of the sixth, and Punxsy held on for a 5-4 win, catapulting itself into the next round.
PAHS recently named its seven MVPs for the spring sports season. They are (from left) Joe Roberts, boys tennis; Nathan Ward, boys track and field â MVP track; Juliann Boddorf, girls track and field â MVP track; Jordan London, boys track and field â MVP field; Alexis Minich, girls track and field â MVP field; Chelsea Engeholm, softball and Ryan Sloninger, baseball.
Punxsy senior Garrett Zimmerman and the rest of his Class of 2013 classmates walked the stage and received their diplomas, marking the end of their academic careers on Friday.
But Monday, Zimmerman and Punxsyâs four other seniors â Michael Blose, Jamie Bush, Taylor Phillips and Ty Zimmerman â hope to extend their high school athletic careers when they take on Hopewell in the opening round of the PIAA State Championships in St. Marys.
The Lady Chucks fell in a closely contested, 2-0 District IX championship game Wednesday afternoon in Brockway at the hands of St. Marys.

Punxsy Shortstop Chelsea Engeholm and second baseman Mary Sloniger come together to make a catch in recent Punxsy softball action. Today, the Lady Chucks will take to the field against the Lady Dutch of St. Marys, with the winner emerging as the District IX Champion.

CLEARFIELD â In an unusual scenario to end the season, the Punxsy junior varsity baseball squad found itself in a considerable deficit Friday.
Trailing 7-3, the JV Chucks showcased the stellar offense they have shown all season for what would be a game-deciding five-run sixth inning, before holding the Bison scoreless in the final two frames for an 8-7 season finale victory.
âWhat a great game; back-and-forth lead changes,â pointed out Punxsy JV head coach Rodney Thompson.
BROOKVILLE â First-place finishers for the Chucks and Lady Chucks at the District IX Championships included:
â˘ Juliann Boddorf, girls' 400-meter dash;
â˘ Alexis Minich, girls' shot put and girls' discus;
â˘ Perry Arrington, boys' pole vault;
â˘ Thomas Renwick, boys' long jump;
â˘ Jordan London, boys' discus.
