Knockout Donation!

Helman's Boxing held a Golden Gloves Amateur Boxing event at the Punxsutawney Area Community Center (PACC) last Saturday night and raised $2,200 that was donated to the center.

Pictured is Rob McCoy (right), executive director of PACC, receiving the check from Alex London (left), 12, who was the winner of his 95-pound bout, which was stopped by the referee in the second round because he was dominating the match.

Helman's Boxing recently moved its practice facility into the second floor above the PACC Fitness Center in the old school board meeting room.

Young rebounds for victory, Bowers wrestles well but bows out of PIAA first day

March 8, 2013

HERSHEY — The wrestling competition does not come at any higher scholastic level than at the Pennsylvania state championships.

Punxsy’s state qualifying duo proved it belonged on the first day of the PIAA AAA Championships at Hershey.

On Thursday, Kaleb Young (126) rebounded from down a point with 40 seconds left for five points to pull out a 10-6 win over Boyertown’s Eddie Kriczky.

Young's elder teammate, Joel Bowers, produced a pair of solid efforts but came up just short in his run at states.

March 4, 2013

ALTOONA — After making the trip by himself last season as the lone state qualifier, Punxsy wrestler Joel Bowers will have some company for next week’s trip across the state.

In his first season, the Chucks’ Kaleb Young not only became a state qualifier but also won the 126-pound weight class of the AAA Northwest Regional in Altoona Saturday night.

Bowers (120) matched his regional finish from a year ago when he secured a consolation final pin.

Guard pair propels Lady Owls to D-IX title over Lady Chucks

March 4, 2013

CLARION — There are usually many reasons why a team loses only two games in an entire season.

On Saturday, two of the biggest reasons were guards Keserra Owens and Ali Rinfrette, who propelled the Bradford Lady Owls to their second District IX AAA girls’ basketball title in a row with a 56-31 final score over the Punxsy Lady Chucks.

“Bradford’s two guards — Owens and Rinfrette — were the key today,” said Punxsy head coach Randy Reitz. “They played very well. Bradford is a solid basketball team.”

CLARION — If you have never felt something slip through your fingers, the Punxsy Chucks boys’ basketball team can tell you how it feels.

With control of the game throughout, Punxsy had the worst time to lose its mojo in the fourth quarter of the District IX title game and gave the championship to Bradford, 49-42, on Saturday at Clarion University.

ALTOONA — As was the case last weekend, the Chucks' district champion duo led the team in the first night of the AAA Northwest Regional Tournament on Friday.

Top-seed Joel Bowers (120) and Kaleb Young (126) paced the Punxsy effort with a combined three wins to move into the regional semifinals held at Altoona High School.
