ST. MARYS — The real Punxsy Lady Chucks basketball team showed for the final five minutes of action on Thursday night.
The arrival of the Punxsy squad, which helped claim 13 wins heading into the District IX semifinal turned out to be just in the nick of time.
Trailing the entire first 27 minutes, the Lady Chucks went on an 11-3 run to take the lead and held on for an eventual 50-47 victory over the host Lady Dutch of St. Marys.
Punxsy's Josh Shuckers grapples with DuBois' Dylan Zimmerman last Thursday night in DuBois. Shuckers claimed a 4-0 shutout, and the two will have a rematch tonight in the 132-pound weight class as part of the preliminary round of bouts at the District IX/IV AAA championship. The Chucks' Joel Bowers (120) is the lone top-seed for the squad, while both Kaleb Young (126) and Perry Arrington (138) are rated second in their weight classes, respectively. For the first time, District IX will combine with District IV for AAA into one district individual championship.
CLARION — The seventh-seeded Lady Raiders kept the dream of the D-IX AA title alive with a hard-fought 50-49 win over the third-seeded Lady Berries in the district playoff semifinals Thursday night at the Tippin Gym at Clarion University.
"It was 32 minutes of the hardest basketball those kids can play. When things started going south late in the game they didn't get rattled they kept their composure and we hit some big free throws late. We did enough to win," said Mark Powell, Lady Raiders varsity coach.
